The course is aimed at students in Years 12 and 13 who are work ready and looking to transition into the workplace with confidence. ‘Gateway’ builds the links between school and business and allows Queen Charlotte College to offer workplace learning opportunities for our students. The programme will develop students’ vocational skills while still at school as they transition into the workplace. Year 11 students seeking to leave school to employment may also be considered.
Students will be able to get first-hand experience of what it’s like in the workforce, and begin the qualifications needed in today’s job market. Students on the Gateway Programme are expected to work off site one day per week in an industry of their choosing or be part of QCC's Building and Aquaculture Academies.
In class learning will focus on;
Planning employment pathways;
Employment contracts;
Safety in the workplace;
Tax and PAYE deductions;
Renting;
Vocational specific learning programme packages are available for career pathways like Retail, Aviation, Hospitality, Building, Mechanics, Youth Work, Health and wellbeing, Cleaning, Farming, Ship Building Tourism and many others.
Students will be assessed both in the workplace and at school using generic Unit Standards at Levels 2 and 3 , and Industry based Unit Standards as appropriate to the individual.
This course can lead to a Modern Apprenticeship or employment.

Short Courses - Throughout the year a number of places will be available on vocational courses funded through the Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR). These courses range from one day to one week and are usually held on site or at private training institutions and polytechnics. Short courses will be advised on the notices as they are planned.
Examples of STAR courses are: Bartending; Barista; Rugby Coaching; Standard First Aid, Defensive Driving, Working at heights, Life Guard Training, Workplace Health and Safety, Chain saw safety, Forklift, Scaffolding.
Individual Courses - Year long online courses are also available through Southland Institute of Technology.
Online Individual Courses are available to suit specific interests, at Level 2 and 3 including Animal care, Sports Coaching, Fashion, Health Science. See Mr Baker to find out if there is a course for you.
