Physical Education develops the social, emotional, intellectual, and cultural capabilities of ākonga.
These capabilities inform the ways in which ākonga understand tikanga in movement contexts, provide diverse ways of participating in physical activities, and contribute to movement's wider benefits to hauora.

At Year 11 Physical Education is an option. Level 1 Physical Education is the introductory course, which sets the foundation for students’ achievement in Level 2 and 3 Physical education.
Students will Learn to:
• understand a range of biophysical principles
• understand that sociocultural factors influence
the moving body
• understand te ao Māori (customary activities and
protocols) influences on the moving body
• apply an understanding of tikanga (correct
practises)
• recognise that the body holds unique
significance and tapu (the different parts of the
body that are important to the whole), and must
be protected and nurtured through movement.
Students will experience opportunities to:
• reflect on how places and spaces influence
movement with reference to te taiao (the
environment that we live in)
• manage self in challenging movement contexts
• develop capabilities and explore strategies to
promote kotahitanga (relationship skills)
• make meaning from how movement may
influence hauora (wellbeing)
• explore the pieces of Significant Learning
through participation in diverse movement
contexts
• develop movement skills and strategies that are
responsive to external cues

This course encourages students to engage in movement experiences that promote and support the development of physical and social skills. It fosters critical thinking and action and enables students to understand the role and significance of physical activity for individuals and society.
Students will be encouraged to participate in physical activities and apply theory to understand their performance and also that of others. There is an EOTC component linked to the standards in this course.
There is a major theory component focusing on Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Learning and Social Factors affecting participation in physical activity.
Achieving in a majority of the standards is reliant on regular attendance to complete participation and reflection requirements.
