A key component of the Residential Program is service, which is included throughout the four weeks. The program aims to develop students’ awareness of their contribution on the environment and to society, through activities such as land care, bush regeneration, community outreach or volunteering. These activities allow students to walk as companions with others to promote social justice and for reconciliation of individuals and their cultures with nature and spirituality. Through an appreciation of the land that they will live and work on, students connect as global citizens to relate life at Vision Valley to how they will contribute beyond the program to walk with others who may be vulnerable, excluded or displaced.
Respect and care for the site on which we live and learn is an essential part of the program to ensure successful communal living. Each student within our community does their part to contribute to the success of the group and, as such, daily duties will be a feature of the program to teach life skills. Small groups will rotate through a roster of duties which can include:
Lodge and room cleaning
Food preparation, service and clean-up
Gardening and tending food gardens
Writing an evening entry into the Blog
It is also expected that students will keep communal spaces including bedrooms, bathrooms, classrooms and living areas neat and tidy.
