American Society During World War II
There is no doubt that World War II was won on the battlefield but there is also no doubt that the war on the battlefield was won because of the sacrifice and commitment of Americans in during the war. The entire American society was dedicated to winning this war and without that dedication, American soldiers may have had a much more difficult time winning this war.
American society was dedicated to winning the war in four distinct areas:
"Doing Without" = Americans were expected to sacrifice. They were required to "ration" items like gas, sugar, animal products, and some clothing.
Manufacturing = factories were "refitted" to produce planes, tanks, bullets, and bombs rather than cars, trains, and washing machines.
"Rosie the Riveter" = Women on the homefront were critical for the war effort. More than 18 million men went off to fight in the war and they left behind 18 million jobs. Those jobs were assigned to women. Without women, American wartime industry would have hit a standstill.
Paying for the war = Americans purchased "war bonds" to help pay for the war. Additionally, Americans planted "victory gardens" so that food can be allocated to the war effort.
