Writing the History of Gheridon;
An Quest for Clarity and Immersion
I enjoy playing Dungeons and Dragons, which is an open-world tabletop roleplaying game. It is played with a number of players roleplaying the actions of their characters in a world established and controlled by the Dungeon Master or DM. The world in which the characters reside can come from a couple of places, either a pre-made setting sold (or found for free online) or, the world can be created completely new by the DM. This is the premise of my project. I wanted to write the history of the setting in which my characters play because I already had some general facts and areas of the setting, but I wanted to have some recurring themes and events I could refer back to to create a more immersive world for the players.
Gheridon is my fictional campaign setting that I created to play D&D with my friends in. There are are six major cities in Gheridon; Gylpen, Stuva, Rödhake, Sündvik, Himmelsk, and Gulliver. It is a monarchy currently under the stewardship of King Alrich "The Just", 5th king of Gheridon.
In the year 7 BU the unification of the previous country of Elidegg falls apart because the government is too decentralized and the governors are too independant. They would disagree on policies and power distribution, causing rifts to form and unity to cease. In 5 BU, Edward I (soon to be King Edward I) convinces the governors of Stuva and Gulliver to join his new nation of Gheridon through trade deals removing levies and allowing free trade between the cities. Two years later, the cities of Gheridon "convince" the Governor of Sündvik to join because of higher taxes for them to trade into Gheridon and military occupation of the city. In the next year, Gheridon begins siege on the final two independent cities, Rödhake and Himmelsk, cutting off all trade and leaving them without outside resources. After a two long years without trade, Rödhake and Himmelsk eventually give in and join the new, fully unified nation of Gheridon.
Edward I of Gylpen
Brought about the unification of Gheridon
Very charismatic, a natural born leader
Also kind of a jerk
He was not afraid to flex his militaristic muscles to get what he wanted
Steven "The Wise"
1st son of Edward I
Established the standardized money system from denominations of copper pieces all the way up to platinum
Began plans for and inter-city roadway system
Established the first wizard college
Established subsidies for farmers
Sired no Children
Edward II "The Idiot King"
Younger brother of Steven "The Wise"
Worst king, by far
Was much too influenced by the suggestions of his advisors
He was a gambler and terrible at it, lost thousands upon thousands of gold pieces
He gave his advisors enormous ammounts of money
Raised taxes, ended the roadway project and lost the 50% of the royal family's fortune
Also had no children
Jens Svenson of Sündvik
Grandson of Edward I through his daughter
Well versed in economics and political interaction because his father was a merchant and an aristocrat
Re-established the roadway project and saw it to its completion
Lowered taxes and spent the royal funds more wisely, brought the reserves back to 90% of what they used to be
Jens was well loved by nearly all his subjects and reigned for nearly 70 years
Alrich "The Just"
Alrich Is the Current King of Gheridon, and son of Jens
He hasn't done much yet, it is still early in his reign
one of his main focuses as king has been to incentivize fair trials and the humane treatment of criminals
his popularity is right about half
He is working on a public education program, but has recieved major pushback from communities not in the major political and intelectual centers
Problems
Northern communities began daming the creeks and rivers
Southern communities had many water powered mills
The dams caused the mills to become all but useless
Southern mill workers began attacking the dams (If caught, they were immediately arrested)
Solutions
Dams are allowed, but they must have a quick release mechanism
If not they are deconstructed by the local authorities
At the end of the 1st and 3rd weeks of the month, they must release ½ of their total capacity
This causes a stream of water for the more southern residents
Magic users also began getting jobs as mill workers to move the mill while the water was restricted
Eclipse Day
Every 5 years there is an eclipse on June 21
Lanterns and candles are lit as the sun goes down
The lanterns use the heat from the candles to float in the air
Families gather together and there is family meals and stories told
Unification Festival
On the week of the aniversary of the unification of Gheridon, there is a big festival to celebrate
Magic users shoot lights and fire into the air to make an effect like fireworks
There is a touring performance group and who goes around giving shows about local heroes and the stories from the unification
Large feasts are had in town centers and there is lots of excitement and partying for the whole week
New Year's Day
On the first day of the year, people gather in the town centers and have their oldest member of the community come and tell stories from their lives
The community comes together to put on this celibration, it is a bit like unification festival but more homely
King's Birthday
In the month of the king's birthday, he tours around the six major cities metting with the aristocracy and the governors there
This is to make sure everything is going well and if the cities need anything from the king, this is the best time to get it from him
There are also parades whenever the king is travelling through the streets
Celebration of Animal Companionship
Pets and working animals are given the day off and pampered
Thats it, giving pets the best day of the year
Taxation Day
Not really a holliday, but a consistent thing that happens monthly
It is the third saturday of the month, each month, every year
