Albert David Reed was born on October 17th, 1852  in Whately, MA to Benjamin Franklin Reed and Sarah Wheeler Sanders.  He was the forth of four children. He lived with his father, mother and sister Sarah until his father abandoned the family in 1863.  His uncle Albert David Sanders died in 1862 and left him $1000.  His mother had the family move to Northampton, MA in 1864.  On April 7th, 1869 he officially changed his name to Albert David Sanders.  The legal records say he wanted to have the full name of his uncle, but I suspect it was also because he was ashamed of the Reed name.  He was working as a clerk at the time.  The 1870 census has him at school, so I wonder if he was working while attending school.  He married Rebecca Clark Strong(1854-1935) on October 8th, 1874 in Northampton, MA.  She was the daughter of Eben S Strong and Rebecca Clark.
