DOES DEBT MATTER THROUGH THE LENS OF MODERN MONETARY THEORY
Abstract:
Modern Monetary Theory has supporters and critics but has neither been implemented nor economically modeled; two traditional economic methods to validate any theory. This paper discusses what Modern Monetary Theory proposes, its strengths and weaknesses, and compares it to traditional and similar economic policies. Additionally, this paper will objectively showcase why the debt and holding a high debt in the economy is indeed important to the economic health of a country. Finally, this paper hopes to showcase the caution that needs to be taken when proceeding with the undertaking of Modern Monetary Theory as a whole.
In traditional economics, we expect the increase of the supply of money to decrease the interest rate leading to an increase in consumer spending.
In addition to traditional economic views, MMT maintains full employment by shifting out the Aggregate Expenditure line to maintain this output in the economy.
