Background of the College
The Palawan State University (PSU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences has a rich history of growth and commitment to healthcare education. Originally established as the Midwifery Department under the College of Sciences, it initially offered the Graduate Midwife program. In 2004, recognizing the increasing need for specialized healthcare education, the department was restructured into an independent college—the College of Nursing and Health Sciences—offering both the Graduate Midwife and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs.
As the field of midwifery evolved, the Graduate Midwife program was phased out in 2007 and replaced by the Diploma in Midwifery, ensuring a more practical and comprehensive approach to maternal and newborn care. In 2019, the college expanded its academic offerings by introducing the BS in Midwifery Bridging Program, designed to provide a pathway for diploma holders to advance their qualifications. This commitment to midwifery education continued in 2023, when PSU launched the 4-year BS in Midwifery program, providing students with a more extensive and holistic training experience.
The Palawan State University (PSU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences continues to evolve in response to the ever-changing demands of healthcare education. The Diploma in Midwifery, which served as a foundational program for aspiring midwives, was officially phased out in 2023, with its final batch of students graduating in 2024. This transition marked a significant shift in the college's focus toward higher-level midwifery education, ensuring that students receive more comprehensive maternal and newborn care training.
Currently, the college offers the BS in Midwifery bridging and 4-year programs, alongside the BS in Nursing, both of which hold their respective Certificates of Compliance from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Moreover, the BS in Nursing program has achieved Level III re-accreditation from the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), reinforcing its dedication to academic excellence and quality assurance.
Through these developments, the PSU College of Nursing and Health Sciences remains committed to producing highly skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals ready to serve communities with expertise and dedication.
Today, the PSU College of Nursing and Health Sciences remains dedicated to shaping competent and compassionate healthcare professionals. It currently offers both the BS in Midwifery bridging and 4-year programs, as well as the BS in Nursing, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their respective fields and serve communities with excellence in healthcare.
