International Health Insurance

Program leaders traveling abroad, whether independently for their scholarship or leading a group of students, have access to a broad range of resources and support based in the Global Safety unit within Penn State Global.

Among the Global Safety team’s many responsibilities is managing Penn State’s international health insurance policy provided by Starr Insurance and International SOS. Individuals undertaking university-affiliated travel are automatically enrolled in emergency medical insurance (Starr Insurance) and gain access to International SOS (ISOS), our designated emergency assistance provider. Those requiring medical and mental health assistance abroad can contact ISOS through the mobile app or by phone, where a representative will assist in locating and scheduling an appointment with a suitable medical facility. Penn State has instituted a direct billing agreement with ISOS, eliminating any out-of-pocket expenses for the traveler. If ISOS is not utilized, resulting in incurred expenses, individuals should contact Global Safety upon their return, and we will assist in submitting a post-travel claim to Starr Insurance.
