Mock Competency Page:
Explore Multiple
Perspectives
This is just one of many competency pages in your portfolio. On this page, you'll find instructions on how to craft your page as well as examples from a few different portfolios.
Here, you can add a couple of sentences about what the competency means to you! Explain what "Explore Multiple Perspectives" means to you. Don't worry about this too much as you can edit it whenever. You'll need to do this for each competency page.
Here you will use text and images to analyze how an activity(project, conference, discussion, presentations, speaker, trip, etc) helped you to further yourself as a global citizen because you learned to explore multiple perspectives...
Below are a few examples of how to write a portfolio entries.
Feel free to take inspiration from these and any of the other portfolios that are visible online. However, do not completely copy the hard work of someone else.
Below is a guide to writing a reflection. While this obviously isn't the only way to write one, it's a great place to get started, especially for reflections for speakers/TED Talks/videos.
Format For A Reflection
Length: Paragraph (6-8 sentences)
Competencies: Then select the Skill that best aligns with your learning. If you don't know, you may upload the reflection to "Help Me Decide" however this would require a conversation with the Director of GSD to best modify your reflection.
Ask Yourself:
Which of the 7 Competencies and specific Skills would you place this in?
Does your reflection tie to that Skill and demonstrate your proficiency level?
Does it meet the length requirement?
Did you add the name and experience type (e.g. Conference, Global Reader, etc) in the title?
Did you include depth, global connections, and personal growth in your reflection?
Structure of a Reflection:
Sentence 1: I had the opportunity to/I was able to see… [Name event/experience]
Sentences 2-5: Summary of the experience RELATING to the planned Skill
(e.g., don't forget to summarize the issue if you're planning on connecting to "Identify Issues")
Sentences 6-7: Tie-in to Skill – how does this experience connect to the specific Skill and demonstrate your learning?
Sentence 8: General conclusion relating to broader global systems OR personal metacognition about how this changed your thinking
NOTE: Be sure to separate your entires by year (e.g. freshman year, sophomore year, etc.) either by using different pages or by using headings like this one here!
EXAMPLE ONE:
Title: Example Reflection for Global Speakers
Skill: Compare Perspectives (Foundational)
Main Competency: Explore Multiple Perspectives
I had the opportunity to watch Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk "The Danger of a Single Story." Adichie is a renowned Nigerian author and feminist who has written acclaimed novels including "Half of a Yellow Sun" and "Americanah," and is recognized globally for her insights on storytelling, identity, and cultural representation. In her talk, Adichie explores how incomplete narratives about people and places create stereotypes and limit our understanding of complex realities, sharing personal examples of how she was viewed through a single lens as an African student in America, while also recognizing her own single-story assumptions about others. She emphasizes that stories have been used to miscommunicate about others, but can also be used to empower and humanize, arguing that the problem isn't that stories are untrue, but that they are incomplete. This experience directly connects to the "Compare Perspectives" Skill because Adichie demonstrates how examining different viewpoints side-by-side reveals the limitations of single narratives. Her examples of contrasting her own assumptions about her American roommate with reality, and comparing how she was perceived versus her actual identity, perfectly illustrate this Skill of actively comparing multiple viewpoints to gain deeper understanding. This talk has transformed my thinking about how I consume media and approach conversations about different cultures, making me more conscious of when I might be operating from incomplete information.
