— WHAT IS THE —
Portfolio System?
Students engage with the GSD program by building an online portfolio that reflects their progress with the PD PASSPORT competencies. Students will use Google Sites, and the GSD coordinator has a template to get students started.
Students demonstrate progress on the seven PD PASSPORT Competencies on their portfolio. The entire PD portfolio is also attached below!
— STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS —
to Writing a Reflection
Step 1: Figure out what type of event you attended and the points that you earned from it.
How?: Look at the Portfolio System Document (below or linked here) and find your event and its number of points. Also be sure to note what other information you need in your reflection (e.g. position, conference name, and award for a Model UN Conference)
Step 2: Figure out what competency it belongs in.
How?: Most events can belong in more than one competency. All you need to do to put something in a competency is be able to justify why it belongs there! So, if you're missing something in a certain competency, feel free to add your new reflection there as long as you can explain it.
Step 3: Write the reflection.
How?: Use this format or use your own. Make sure to focus on what you gained from the experience as opposed to just summarizing what happened. For more information, click here.
Sentence 1: "I had the opportunity to/I was able to see…" [Name of Speaker & Name of Talk]
Sentence 2: Sentence about the speaker’s background in the field
Sentences 3-5: Summary of the talk RELATING to the planned competency
(don’t forget to summarize the issue if you’re planning on talking about identifying issues)
Sentences 6-7: Tie-in to competency – how does it relate to the competency?
Sentence 8: General conclusion and relate to the broader world OR personal thoughts on talk
Step 4: Add it to your portfolio.
How?: Find your portfolio, navigate to the correct competency and year page and put it in. Add a heading, any required information, and any supplemental images. For more information about Google Sites, click here.
If you're still confused, email your GSD mentor or any one of the student leaders, found on the homepage.
— STRUCTURE OF THE —
Portfolio System
The GSD portfolio works as follows. After partaking in an experience (coursework, travel, presentations, conferences, etc.), you need to reflect on the information and the benefits that you gained from the experience and classify it into one of the seven PD PASSPORT competencies! An example of this can be found in the model portfolio!
For more information about the portfolio system, including a specific breakdowns of the number of points, check out the PDS GSD Portfolio System document!
This document outlines everything you need to know about your portfolio reflections, including what you need, how many points each experience gets, and a list of opportunities that you can take advantage of to ensure that you're getting the points that you need!
Feel free to email your mentor or the GSD coordinators if you have any questions regarding this!
— TRAVEL —
JOURNAL
If you travel and want to use that to gain points towards your Global Studies diploma, check out the information to the left to learn more about what you need to do to gain the points.
Like it says on the document, this doesn't necessarily have to be a boring Google Document, but it can instead be an iMovie, Google Slide, or other creative outlet that still meets the requirements outlined.
— POINTS —
TRACKER
Make a copy of the Summative Analysis and add it to your GSD homepage! Make sure to keep it updated with the correct number of points!
NOTE: The bottom section has the information regarding the requirements to graduate with the diploma and with the distinction of Global Ambassador.
