Vincent Van Gogh and Dr Gachet

By Alexandros Eleftheriadis

- Greetings, Mr Van Gogh. Have you done any progress?

- I wouldn’t say that. I ‘m still feeling the same miserable way…

- Would you like to be more specific?

- It’s like I’m in an abyss, an abyss I want to escape from but the sorrow won’t let me and I don’t know why…

- What do you believe is outside this abyss?

- Honestly? I don’t know. At this moment I have forgotten what happiness feels like… All I can do is hoping for a better end, but still … how do I know that outside this abyss things are better? How do I know that life is better than death? At the back of my mind there is a white, bright Angel waiting for me to join her in Heaven!

- Interesting…Have you tried to paint anything?

- I finished my latest painting but it’s no use…still the same dark colours…

- I see… Well, I’ll be thinking about what you told me and I’ll see you again tomorrow. In the meantime, try to paint something brighter, maybe a portrait of me. Who knows… perhaps this way you’ll meet the Angel you’re looking for …

Dr Gachet’s portrait by Van Gogh was sold for $82.5 million at Christies, establishing a price record.
