Mathematics

There are numerous paths that a student may take to advance through PPHS math courses.  Students may only take one math course per year unless there is consent from a PPHS math instructor to take an additional course simultaneously. It is expected that students will enroll in the standard math classes. If there is a need for a student to be placed in a slower paced Algebra, Geometry, or Algebra 2 class, this may only occur with teacher permission. Math classes paced at a slower pace for student success are not electives.

Pre-Algebra

Credit: One unit per year

Weight: 4/4

Open To: Grade 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Next Course in Mathematics sequence: Algebra 141 or Algebra 131

Curriculum Map

Pre-Algebra courses increase students' foundational mathematics skills and prepare them for Algebra I by covering a variety of topics, such as operations with integers; expressions, equations, and inequalities; ratio, proportion, and percent; linear functions and graphing; powers and nonlinear functions; right triangles; distance; angles; surface area and volume; and probability and statistics.

Algebra 141

Credit: One unit per year

Weight: 4/4

Open To: Grade 10

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Next Course in Mathematics Sequence: Geometry 241 or Geometry 231

Curriculum Map

Algebra 141 will encompass the same math skills as Algebra 131 however, the class will meet every day.  The class is designed to provide extra guided practice on math concepts.  All students who take Algebra 141 will still be required to take two more full-year math courses in order to meet graduation requirements.

Algebra 131
