A customer could use various methods to quickly find information within the website. Also, an employee accessing information on a company intranet could use the same methods.
Predefined links which take you directly to part of the page. A hyperlink is an area of a web page that contains a link to another location on the Web. Hyperlinks link one web page/site to another enabling the user to move directly from one to the other without having to type in the URL
or
Internet Protocol Address. Quick for the user (reduces errors in input) and useful for finding more information on a subject/topic. One problem is that these links are not always kept up to date.
Click on an image which either displays more details or takes you to another part of a website
e.g. Click on an image of the product to find out more details of the product / go to product section
Type in a keyword and go directly to that section
HOW A SEARCH ENGINE WORKS
How a search engine works, how web pages are added to search engine lists
Web Crawler - continually searches the web looking for new pages and recording information they find/browsers the web and keeps an index of what it finds. Run by search engines, these programs ‘visit’ web sites and collect URLs which can be indexed to help with searches. Good for finding new sites.
A web crawler searches around the Internet looking at heavily used servers or popular webpages. The web crawler looks at significant words and notes their location on a page and where they were found. The web crawler also looks at meta tags, titles and sub-titles. This process never stops.
Search Engine - An application accessed over the internet that maintains indexes of web pages; and allows you to use logical operators/key words to find the information you require.
