Learning Glass

This page gives a brief introduction into making recordings using a Learning Glass lightboard.  If you are at all interested, have any questions or would like to book a slot to record some content on the hardware, please email eLearn@port.ac.uk

Video Introductions and Example Video

Learning Glass

Lightboards are an innovative technology that allows you to create engaging video content that captures your audience’s attention.

It is a transparent glass whiteboard that has LED lighting shooting through it.

The Lightboard works through internal reflection and when you write on the glass with neon markers some of the light refracts and the writing illuminates.

The presenter writes on the glass while continuously facing their audience. The image is then flipped in post-production.

Writing on the Learning Glass feels very much like writing on any standard whiteboard in the classroom with the added benefit of the teacher being able to maintain eye-contact with their audience.

Research has taken place that outlines the positives for capturing content in such a way (see below) and there are supporting principles that deem videos filmed via this method are particularly effective in teaching concepts.

The Recording Process

The video is recorded in a standard way using Panopto Capture. Within the Technology Enhanced Learning team, we then download and place the video into a video editing system (such as Camtasia Studio - available on AppsAnywhere) where we flip the video horizontally 180°  We then reupload the video to the Lecturer/staff member's personal Panopto folder so that it can be reviewed and used as deemed appropriate for learning.

Please note: Our aim is to make the process as swift and as easy as possible so that the user can concentrate on the content captured. The videos will appear as recorded. If further editing and enhancement is needed (insertion of graphics and text) this will need to be resourced by the appropriate faculty team.
