Physical Education (P.E.) is a requirement for graduation by the California State Education Code 51222 and by the Pleasanton Unified School District Policy 6113.4. Requests to modify this requirement are processes on a case by case basis. In NO case shall small physical education credits toward graduation be awarded to a student modifying the physical education program.
Students must take PE in 9th grade. Students may only waive PE if they have passes the Fitnessgram (except medical waivers).
A Physical Education Waiver may be requested for the following:
1) Interscholastic Sports -
Any two seasons of any school-sponsored sport waives 5 credits (1 semester)
10 credits(1 Year) maximum can be waived.
2) Out of School Physical Activity -
Pupils engaged in an approved out-of-school physical activity sponsored by a non-school group which meets criteria and objectives listed for the physical education program may be exempted from physical education. 10 units (1 Year) are the maximum that can be waived. The review committee must approve the request. Contact the Vice Principal overseeing PE to be considered for this option. Factors to be considered shall include:
-Must match eight areas of the State Framework for PE
-Must be pre-approved by PE site committee
-Must pass all areas of freshmen fitness gram
-Must be at least 400 minutes of activity every 10 days
Out of School Physical Activity waiver packet requires coach signatures, detailed logs of activity, etc. Students may submit completed packets via email to Ms. Friesen (please also cc your counselor) to begin the review process.
3) Illness or Injury -
Pupils suffering from a short-term disability shall provide a written statement to that effect from his/her physician and may postpone PE to a later semester. Students who cannot participate in PE due to medical reasons for their entire high school career can submit a doctors note saying that PE needs to be waived for all 4 years.
4) Marching Band -
Students can use one year of participation in Marching Band to waive one semester of PE. Ninth grade PE cannot be waived, but 9th grade Marching Band can be used to apply toward the waiver. Two years in Marching Band waives one year of PE, this includes Color Guard. Students must have waiver form signed by band teacher.
