VR goggles are always a student favorite at The Imagination Lab. 4th graders viewed the book The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock using this VR technology.
The book is about the young life of Wassily Kandinsky, an abstract artist who had synesthesia, an inherited trait where the brain mixes up senses, often pairing two at one time. An individual with synesthesia may be able to see music as colors, for example. There are many types of synesthesia.
Another activity of the day was playing, "Does your Quake Survive?" A game about inherited traits and learned behaviors.
4 Scenarios about the fictional Quake species were read to students including information about their environment, survival needs, and behaviors.
Students then determined if inherited or learned behavior traits would help their Quake survive. They made a pie chart of their class data showing which fraction of their Quakes survived. This was a highly interactive game and we enjoyed seeing their creative Quake illustrations.
Students concluded the activity with a challenge to create an abstract art piece in the style of Kandinsky.
