2nd graders experienced their 3rd Odyssey this December.
They constructed 3D shapes from paper and explored "What are some shapes that materials can take?"
This segued into exploring 5 materials and their properties, such as: transparency, opaqueness, rigidity, flexibility, smoothness, and roughness. The materials examined were newspaper, aluminum foil, wax paper, plastic, and cardboard.
The students enjoyed reading the book, What If Rain Boots Were Made of Paper? by Kevin Beals and P. David Pearson.
We heard many interesting comments from students about various uses for materials during this book reading!
The term "property" was an important part of this lesson. A property is "something about a substance that you can see, hear, smell, taste, or feel."
Students revisited a previous Odyssey lesson about parts of a seed and sketched out an invention for protecting a seed, choosing from the materials they had available to them.
