The Paper Screen is a process and tool for gathering data from print or digital media, comparing that data to indicators found in the CA NGSS TIME Rubrics, and analyzing the evidence based on a critical examination of the instructional materials.
Disclaimer: Do NOT try to set up your virtual paper screen environment a few hours before you are going to meet with your team. It will take some time to set up this virtual environment.
The Virtual TIME Paper Screen process consists of five rubrics plus overarching general files that are applicable to all rubrics.
Rubric 5 - Program Evaluation (not currently available. Please contact us if you need it in virtual form.)
Note: If any of these materials are confusing, please contact your local county office for assistance.
Google Folders:
Create a google folder for participants to use. Within that folder, put sub-folders for each of the rubrics. Note: There will only be one folder with one set of documents that is shared with the whole group, as all of these documents are meant to be collaborative. MAKE SURE PARTICIPANTS DO NOT TRY TO MAKE THEIR OWN COPIES OF FOLDERS OR FILES. Facilitators are expected to be the only ones creating folders and files within Google Drive. Documents which are specific to individuals or parts groups will be clearly noted.
2. Copy files:
Make a copy of each of the template files you will need for each of the rubrics and put them in their respective rubric folders.
Paper Screen General Files
All of the Paper Screen General Files will be needed for Rubric 1.
The VT.PAP.01. General / Summative Paper Screen Guiding Document and the VT.PAP.04. Conceptual Flow (Original, Alt-Rubric1, Alt-Rubric2&3) will be needed for all of the Rubrics 1-4. (See image/info below)
There are two versions of each guiding document: sheet or doc. Decide which would be best for your participants based on their comfortability with those file types.
Link the files in their main Guiding Document on the table of contents tab and on the cells that they are utilized. (Places where you need to place a link are filled in green.)
3. Amount of Participants and Materials:
Identify how many participants you will have and how many parts group. Divide the amount of participants by the amount of parts group to find the amount of whole groups. (# Participants / # parts groups = # whole groups).
Review all of the jamboards and sheets to ensure the correct number of participants response spaces and parts response spaces are given. Please see rubric pages for more detailed information.
4. Generic Modifications:
Identify if you are planning to modify the flow of activities from the official TIME training and change files accordingly. Please note that although LEA’s may decide to do so, the NGSS Collaborative does not recommend that the flow of activities be modified.
A silent conversation protocol is used throughout (individual thinking and writing on the sheet prior to conversation). Identify where you would like to keep this protocol and where you could instead utilize time saving alternatives.
If a modified slideDeck is utilized, place it in the respective rubric folder for participants to access. All slide numbers listed in each Rubric Guiding Document currently aligns with the original TIME slide decks. Those numbers will need to be changed to match your modified slideDeck.
