The Prescreen is a “quick look” tool and process to determine if a given set of instructional materials has the potential to be designed for the California NGSS and warrants further review.
Besides the virtual environment your team will work in, a large part of the prescreen is accessing publisher materials online. Please see below a list of login information for each of the CA NGSS adopted publishers plus preselected lessons for teams to review in grades 1, 4, and 7.

1. Google Folders:
Create a google folder for participants to use. Note: There will only be one folder with one set of documents that is shared with the whole group, as all of these documents are meant to be collaborative. MAKE SURE PARTICIPANTS DO NOT TRY TO MAKE THEIR OWN COPIES OF FOLDERS OR FILES. Facilitators are expected to be the only ones creating folders and files within Google Drive. Documents which are specific to individuals or parts groups will be clearly noted.
2. Copy files:
Make a copy of each of the template files you will need.
Link the files in their main Guiding Document on the table of contents tab and on the cells that they are utilized. (Places where you need to place a link are filled in green.)
3. Materials / Amount of Participants:
Identify how many participants you will have.
Review all of the files to ensure the correct number of participants response spaces and parts response spaces are given.
Decide if you want to use the Sheet or Doc version of the Guiding Document.
On VT.PRE.01. Prescreen Guiding Document:
modify Tab 1.Less of / More of by selecting to either do the Jamboard (Version A), sheet version (Version B) of the original activity associated with slide 5, or the modified activity (Version C). Simplify Tab 1 by deleting the cells you will not use based on your choice. Either discard or copy VT.PRE.03 Less of / More of Jamboard (Version A) based on your choice.
Modify Tab 5.Prescreen to include the names and grouping arrangements you will use and which curriculums each group is being assigned to review.
Review the Curriculum you wish to have the team engage with. Modify Tab 5.Prescreen and 6.Prescreen Summary to include only the curriculums you are reviewing. Also identify which lessons you wish them to review per curriculum. For your convenience, lessons have been selected in 1st, 4th and 7th grade and listed on VT.PRE.08 CA NGSS Adopted Curricula - Selected Lessons sheet.
In the CA NGSS Adopted Curricula folder, each adopted publisher has a folder with information including access usernames and passwords. Please review these and try logging into each curriculum to verify that they are still active.
Make copies of the following documents based on whether you would like them to be collaborative at a whole group level or small groups, and label them accordingly. Modify the following documents to be reflective of the amount of participants you have.
VT.PRE.03 Less of / More of (if you have selected in Tab 1 of the Guiding Document to engage in the Jamboard version.)
Make one copy of the VT.PRE.05. CA NGSS TIME Prescreen Tool (H2) form and ensure that participants do not have editing rights, but can only submit to it. Ensure they do not try to make a copy of it but they understand that all participants are submitting to the same form.
4. Generic Modifications:
Identify if you are planning to modify the flow of activities from the official TIME training and change files accordingly. Please note that although LEA’s may decide to do so, the NGSS Collaborative does not recommend that the flow of activities be modified.
A silent conversation protocol is used throughout (individual thinking and writing on the sheet prior to conversation). Identify where you would like to keep this protocol and where you could instead utilize time saving alternatives.
If a modified slideDeck is utilized, place it in the respective rubric folder for participants to access. All slide numbers listed in the Guiding Document currently aligns with the original TIME slide decks. Those numbers will need to be changed to match your modified slideDeck.
