Señor Wooly and me at the NTPRS conference in Chicago - July 2019
In class, we utilize the educational website senorwooly.com to help with acquiring Spanish.
The input-based curriculum has over 50 types of activities that provide students with the comprehensible repetitions they need to acquire language.
Typically, we watch a Señor Wooly video that relates to our curriculum. The video contains English and Spanish subtitles so that students can follow along and understand the story. After we watch the video, students read the story together. The reading reinforces the targeted vocabulary in a contextual manner so that students can remember the language. Once we read the story, we participate in a variety of activities in class to lock the vocabulary in our long-term memory.
Jim Wooldridge, creator of Señor Wooly, is a former middle school Spanish teacher based out of Chicago. He uses appropriate humor and compelling stories to write songs that are catchy, fun, and educational. He has also written graphic novels about his most famous characters, Billy la Bufanda and Victor.
He regularly conducts workshops at national conferences to share his expertise with other teachers on how to incorporate his fun songs into any curriculum.
