Project Description: Nico and I worked together as a pair to create a storage for all the scrap wood used for laser cutting. We designed the storage in Fusion 360.
Brainstorm:
This was a similar base model for our prototype build in the beginning and we started designing it once we measured each side.
We presented the relative model to Ms. Tran and Mr. Bergenstalk and they both approved the base design.
Procedure:
This was our first prototype we designed in Fusion 360. It was designed to also have four castors on the bottom to move in out underneath the desk.
After showing our fusion design, Mr. Bergenstalk asked us on how we could add a sort of handle and we decided to attach a leather strap around the front of the design to help move it out under the desk. We also were told to scale down our design by 50% and laser cut cardboard for our prototypes.
This was out first design in cardboard. It was scaled down 50%. We just didn't print out the left large wall and the middle divider. The only problem was our front of the design wall. Ms. tran said it was not long enough and just barely didn't touch the large walls on each of it's sides.
This is our redesigned front wall piece that fits properly.
We laser cut out our divider in the middle and re-lasercut the front of design and everything fit properly. However, we needed to change the front wall(white cardboard) so that the bottom would touch the floor instead of being on top of the bottom card wood piece to make it more stable and have a better base. Another piece we needed to do now is create one more divider on the back compartment so it would better fit the large pieces of wood we would store in the back storage part. It was too wide and the large wood pieces would shift around and we needed to make a storage space area that was more compact.
Mr. Bergenstalk and Ms. Tran both said our designs seemed fine right now and we only needed to add some dividers and make the measurements perfect.
Final Design: This was our final design and it turned out really well. We got all the measurements right and we got the dividers all matched up. The front compartment is for loose and small scraps while the back compartment is for storing large pieces of wood and the divider in the back is for thin large pieces of wood.
Reflections
Strength
My strength during this project was working well with my partner Nico and time management. Because we had to work together to coplete this project on time we needed to be effective in planning and finishing each goal every day.
Opportunity
I think we could've avoided a lot more small mistakes such as measurement issues if we designed it better.
Understand
I learned that I should use my time well while waiting for Ms. Tran to finish things with others and laser print. I could've used that time adding to my portfolio or designing a more efficient build.
Limitation
I feel like I was talking a lot with others while waiting for laser cutting. I could've used that time for other more productive things like designing.
WISCR
-W I think I was well rounded throughout the project as we designed and laser cut quickly as soon as we finished with our designs in Fusion 360. We also were quick to fix the designs even when Nico wasn't here some days.
-I I also think I was insightful in the project. Nico and I had a good understanding of the project knowing how to design the walls and understanding the requirements and due date. We were able to laser print multiple designs and fix our mistakes despite having a lot of people on the laser cutting machine.
