Instructions: In this assignment, each student will design a scaled boat! That may be selected for use during the NEXT project. During THIS project, you will...
Sketch 1 or more Boat Designs on Graph Paper
Construct 1 or more Scaled Prototype Boats
Write about what you leaned during the prototyping process
Rubric:
3pt Graph Paper Boat Sketch. One boat sketch on graph paper. Labeled with separate FOLD LINES and CUT LINES. Each section is labeled. The paper is SCANNED with a document scanning app.
3pt Graph Paper Boat Built. The boat is assembled and waterproofed with duct tape. Two photographs are taken of the model on a clean background.
4pt Graph Paper Boat Analysis. A 110-word analysis is written about what worked, what could be improved, or anything that was learned during the first two steps.

MADDY EXAMPLE
The tape laid out on the floor is 18in x 24in.
LANDON Example
The tape laid out on the floor is 24in x 36in.
F.A.Q.
Can the design use more than one sheet of cardboard?
Kinda. For the next project, each team will have 1.5 sheets of cardboard to construct their BOAT + DECORATIONS + PADDLES
Do I have to use the reference images?
No. Your design can be anything.
Is the whole big boat going to be laser cut in the next project?
No... You will use your CAD drawing to help you map out your cuts by hand with precision using the dimensions. You will have the option to laser cut your paddles and decorations.
Sketch your boat design on graph paper! The graph paper given is proportional to a full sheet of cardboard given for the next project. REMEMBER to make sure your base is big enough to fit your sailor!
Use SOLID lines for cut lines
Use DOTTED lines for fold lines
Label each section
Scan your work with a DOCUMENT SCANNING APP this will prevent warping of the image so it can be used properly when we create a CAD file.
Use the document scanning function in the apple notes app
Or download "PhotoScan" by google
Glue it down!
Use a smoothing tool to make sure its adhered well!
You can cut with either scissors or Exacto blades. Remember, only cut half way through fold lines!
EVERY SURFACE must be covered with duct tape to make it sea worthy!
Take MULTIPLE images of your finished model on a clean surface from different angles.
Write 110 words about....
What worked
What could be improved
What you learned from this process
