T-RIOT is composed by:
Pietro VINCENTI (PIANO)
Francesco LOMAGISTRO (DRUMS)
Camillo PACE (DOUBLE BASS)
THE BAND
T-RIOT: a trio of three friends, first of all, huge jazz fans, who meet again after several years of personal and varied "wandering in the spaces of sound", and take stock of their musical origins. Jazz of course, but also the several different experiences they embraced in their wanderings (funk, pop, blues, reggae, electronic, etc.).
Now the trio comes as a whole, culminating in a musical space were the three musicians do not hide, but instead want to emphasize and exploit all their experiences, passions, and the artistic and cultural events they have lived individually over the years, in their own natural and spontaneous way, often in private and unofficial ways, but still spontaneously and joyfully.
A "riot" trio: so, a bunch of rebels, not only towards a sound and a traditional formula (the jazz trio, in fact) without which, in his most famous examples (Evans, Jarret, etc.), today there wouldn't be any trio at all and for which we have great respect. “Rebels” towards the several (perhaps now also too many) musical drifts that neglect to include just the best and most characteristic elements of that jazz trio "traditional" formula: rather a "rebellion" towards that mere "playing on himself" often too dull, abstruse and edgy (sometimes too minimalist and sterile, almost trivial), that seems to have gone so fashionable in certain restricted circles of self-styled connoisseurs in the last years.
So, with freshness and simplicity, the T-RIOT draws on essential elements of the jazz tradition, such as the groove and especially the BLUES, an extrovert and at the same time respectful treatment of the "standards", both daring and sophisticated forms but often rough, almost naive, "naked and raw". All in all, the effort is aimed at focusing more on the musical personality of the three musicians and their sincere and profound musical passions rather than on finding a cold and empty complexity, an end in itself.
T-RIOT: a new and powerful sound, definitely innovative, developed with an original and eclectic musical personality that wants to give a contribution to the richness of the best and different styles of jazz that have become "classics", with a peculiar, spontaneous, easy-going and loving respect for them.
THE ALBUM
This is the first album for this band, entirely live recorded in one day and and half on May 2016. Thanks to Francesco LOMAGISTRO, the band was assembled by long-time friends (who took many different musical ways in the meanwhile) in the last quarter of 2015 as “resident trio” to play regular jazz gigs and “jam sessions” two days a week in a lovely jazz club and wine bar in the town of Taranto (the “MAGNA GRECIA” side of Puglia, ITALY). Then, the three musicians, according to the audience requests too, decided to make a recording, even just trying to put on cd the freshness of sound and joy they brought in those months to their local audience.
Tracklist (the project):
DESERT HIGHWAY (P. VINCENTI)
This is the true “live” introductive composition written by P. Vincenti right for the trio, built gig after gig as an opening tune, with its distinctive and personal groove, designed as a large, peaceful journey in open spaces.
WILLOW WEEP FOR ME (Ann Ronell)
A very beautiful tune from the oldest jazz tradition, talking about a heartbreak reflected by a crying tree... one of the few tunes in the standard/jazz tradition written by a woman! They say… the lover of George Gershwin…and some malicious said that this tune was too beautiful to be composed by a woman and it was instead written by Gershwin as a secret pledge of love... but we don't believe that! W MISS RONELL!
ST PETERSBURG TRAIN (P. VINCENTI)
Another ride…with some secret and discreet quotes/ideas from Gershwin and Coltrane… so, it was fun for us to play with the idea of the mystical journey of a family, the Gershowitz, coming from Saint Petersburg to New York, in a metaphysical “cold train”, discovering and CREATING A WHOLE NEW (MUSICAL) WORLD.
SAD DEVIL (P. VINCENTI)
A very old tune from Mr. Vincenti… with an entire fresh new part (unison theme for piano and double bass) to better meet the favor of Mr. Lomagistro and Mr. Pace; the main theme is a “tritone” interval, that in the middle ages was called “DIABOLUS IN MUSICA”…the tune speaks about the sadness, the shabbiness and the depression that to be forced to do the evil, even for a devil, means.
SIGN OF THE TIMES (Prince)
As time passes, we see great and beloved musicians passing away… Prince was one of them, right in the days we were playing and planning our recording… there was no question: we played some tunes we loved from the great “Minneapolis elf”…then we chose this tune for the great funk vibe and for the remarkable lyrics, incredibly current in 2016 too.
STAY WITH ME (Sam Smith)
One of Mr. Pace's favourites… it started as a joke, a night that a unknown pop singer came on stage for a jam, and we selected this tune ‘cause it was very easy to play (just the same three easy chords all the time)… but we continued to play it and we realized it’s a little masterwork, precisely because its soul/gospel appeal, easy melody and few chords, and very emotional.
PHARAOH OF LOVE (P. VINCENTI)
Well, it’s incredible that it is so difficult to find someone that knows and loves the art of a great musical and spiritual master as Pharoah SANDERS, one of the few jazz players in the history clearly expressing an easy, beautiful and strong message to to the whole world, of love and peace, health and joy for everyone: this is our tribute to the musician… and to the message.
LIBRA (Gary Bartz)
Another great beloved musician bringing on, in its own way, the coltranian heritage, is Gary Bartz: it is possible to record beautiful jazz just choosing the right, great tunes that most people (and musicians) seems to ignore… P. Vincenti proposed this delightful tune for Mr. Lomagistro, chosen by Max Roach too, for its intriguing rhythm construction.
I WISH I KNEW HOW IT WOULD FEEL TO BE FREE (Billy Taylor)
We love blues, soul and gospel… but we find just a little strange to watch “gospel musicians” from mediterranean area... so, we chose this tune because it is NOT a religious tune and because… the message is everything. Freedom, we are afraid, is never done: it’s all the time, every time, an hoping achievement… in the 60’s in the USA this was a song talking about civil rights for black people… today, we see, it still talks about exploitation, pollution, poverty, war, and so on… We still need to be free, from something or someone.
THE LONG GOODBYE (P. VINCENTI)
One night, towards the end of the concert, we played an hard bop coltranian modal blues, in a very violent sounding way… at the end we stopped to the last chord, takin’ a breath after all that cosmic “sheets of sound”…but we didn’t want to end that way… so we took a different slow tempo, improvising this “andalusian cadence”… from that moment on, it was our (trip-hop?!?) ending theme on every concert.

T-Riot (Pietro Vincenti/Camillo Pace/Francesco Lom —Different Truth ... CD --- Albore Jazz (Japan), 2017. New Copy ...
A rock-solid trio session, with a top-shelf Italian groove pedigree – as the group features two members from Berardi Jazz Connection, and the pianist from Quintetto X! You might remember those two groups from their more club jazz-oriented projects from the previous decade or two – but this time around, all three musicians are in a straighter jazz vein – yet still one that's filled with plenty of rhythm! The piano, bass, and drums come together fantastically here – with Pietro Vincenti on acoustic keys, Camillo Pace on bass, and Francesco Lomagistro on drums – romping together through some great titles of their own, and a few really excellent remakes as well. And while the focus on rhythm is quiet strong, Vincenti gets off some especially great solo moments too – breaking from the bass and drums, while still holding their energy – in a way that almost seems inspired by classic Brazilian trios of the 60s. Titles include versions of Gary Bartz's "Libra", Billy Taylor's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", and Prince's "Sign Of The Times" – plus the originals "Pharoah Of Love", "Sad Devil", "Desert Highway", and "The Long Goodbye".
