5TH TO 6TH GRADE TRANSITION

There are so many emotions and thoughts that come along with the transition into middle school. Entering middle school needs to be viewed as a "process" rather than an "event" for students to have a successful transition. To assist students in the transition from elementary to middle school, we begin our "process" early, with the hopes that students are acclimated to ACMS at the start of their 6th grade year. Overall, our goal is to help reduce anxiety, and increase excitement about being in middle school. To learn more about the transition process and activities offered, please view the timeline located below.

TRANSITION TIMELINE:

JANUARY:

  • Asa's school counselors meet with all fifth grade students. During this time, we introduce the students to information about ACMS and our scheduling process.

  • ACMS fifth grade orientation is held for students and parents. Parents and students learn about the transition into middle school and the scheduling process for the following school year.

  • Students submit their choice between Band and Music Appreciation & Performance for 6th grade.

APRIL/MAY:

  • Co-facilitated transition lesson with Horizon and ACMS school counselors.

  • Students complete a survey about middle school, and have the opportunity to submit questions and concerns they have about life at ACMS.

  • Fifth grade students visit and tour ACMS. Students learn more about life at Asa and get answers to questions that were submitted through the survey.

  • The school counselors meet with Horizon teachers and counselor to share information about the incoming students to ensure that we are aware of any important needs or supports.

JULY:

  • Finalized schedules are released to students.
