Middle school is all about transitions! Students transition into middle school, and in a quick blink of a eye they are preparing to transition out of middle school into high school! Social groups shift, and students evolve from children into young adults. It's no wonder that the middle school years are often referred to as "The Rollercoaster Years"!
Middle school isn't just tough for our adolescents, either. Parents often face new challenges as they journey these years with their children. Adolescents often pull away from parents, seeking more time within social groups. Parents look for ways to connect with their children who are exposed to new, unfamiliar technologies, and are more hesitant to share details about their days and thoughts. Emotional changes result in mood swings, increased sensitivity to the perceptions of others, irrational beliefs about what people should or shouldn't be like, and a greater demand on academic and social skills.
Through these difficulties, however, is a wonderful time of growth. Parents watch children begin to think more abstractly, and develop self-identities. Strengths and interests continue to expand, and new opportunities afforded during the middle school years ignite new interests. In essence, they become their own individuals.
As the student services team, we look forward to joining students and families on this journey. Together we will celebrate successes and, and we are here to support you through the challenges.
