Accessing Digital Libraries

Below you will find a list of digital ebook and virtual tour libraries that are available.

eBook Libraries

Teachers now have home access to the Irish Newspaper Archive (via a Scoilnet Account sign in). You will find the Irish Newspaper Archive under the Tools for Teachers section of the Scoilnet home page. https://www.scoilnet.ie/scoilnet/tools-for-teachers/

Cambridge University Press and the Royal Irish Academy have opened access to the Dictionary of Irish Biography to Irish IP addresses. 

Teachers need to create an account which is always free for teachers. Parents can avail of a 30 day free trial.  Contains over 40,000 digital books which can be sorted by grade, Lexile measure and more. Epic can track student reading and teachers can set books to be read. Lots of audiobooks are also available.


Oxford Owl provides access to a selection of Oxford Reading Tree books to help children aged 3-11 develop their reading skills at home.  There is a read aloud feature available and some interactive activities also.  Books are sorted by colour band.

Irish public libraries provide all users with a wide range of free online services including eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, online courses and online newspapers.  Register with Libraries Ireland for a free account to access their bank of ebooks via the BorrowBox app. 


News Mag Media publishes award-winning, curriculum-linked news magazines for primary schools in Ireland.  Three monthly titles are issued.  

Also contains a range of activities, including weekly quizzes, close tests and mental maths.

360 Cities provides a vast collection of panoramic images and videos from around the world.

INTO Virtual Tours is an expanding repository of virtual tours available for free collated by the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO), including zoos, Irish and international museums.

Explore the world with Google Maps Treks. Take a Street View journey to sites of cultural, historical, and geographic significance, including the Galapagos Islands, Mont Blanc, Pyramids of Giza.

Google Arts and Culture is an online platform which features content from over 2000 leading museums and art galleries. The public can view high-resolution images and videos of artworks and cultural artefacts from partner cultural organisations throughout the world.
