The following includes some of the criteria for being a Mentor / Associate Teacher:
Is a permanent contract teacher (Note:LTO teachers are not eligible to be an associate teacher as their term could be ended at any time during the school year)
Three or more years of experience as a permanent teacher
Is a strong role model for new teachers / teacher candidates
Demonstrates current evidenced-based instruction and assessment practices
Has a solid understanding of curriculum expectations
Possesses an equity-minded and anti-oppressive mindset:
Recognizes systemic barriers, racism, and the marginalization of individuals
Takes action in their practice to dismantle these barriers
Programs in response to the diverse and specific identities, strengths, and needs of their students
Forms positive relationships with colleagues, students, families, and community members
Possesses asset-based stance when supporting student achievement and well-being
Fosters an inclusive learning environment where students feel a strong sense of belonging and challenges are met with care and consideration for individual needs and identities
Demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional learning
Sets aside time to meet with new teachers / teacher candidates to engage in planning and coaching
