Criteria to consider when selecting Mentors, Mentor Leads, and Associate Teachers:
has at least five years teaching experience (NOTE: any new teacher appearing in VISTA as a Year 1 or 2 teacher is not eligible to be a mentor)
demonstrates current evidenced-based instruction and assessment practices
possesses an anti-oppressive, anti-racist and growth mindset
is committed to continuous professional learning
is willing to set aside time to meet regularly with mentee
is an equity-minded educator who:
recognizes systemic barriers, racism, and the marginalization of individuals,
takes action in their practice to dismantle these barriers,
programs in response to the diverse and specific identities and needs of their students.
- Mentor Leads are teacher leaders who oversee and support the mentoring initiatives at the school level in supporting teacher candidates and new teachers. This is done in collaboration with the school administrators and the NTIP/Side by Side Instructional Coordinator. Each school administrator will select a teacher leader in their school to take on this role.
- NTIP / Side by Side Mentors are experienced teachers who support new permanent and LTO teachers through mentoring at the school level. They assist new teachers in building confidence and efficacy in their teaching practice by committing to meeting regularly with new teachers to engage in collaborative professional learning, coaching, and consulting.
- Associate Teachers are experienced teachers who invite teacher candidates from the faculties of education into their classroom in order to gain practical experience in teaching. Associate teachers mentor teacher candidates by providing ongoing feedback to improve practice, and fulfill requirements outlined by the faculty program.
- Administrators are critical partners in all mentoring initiatives. They carefully match new teachers and teacher candidates with experienced, effective, equity-minded educators who are committed to ongoing professional learning and action anti-racist and culturally responsives and relevant teaching practices . They provide ongoing support and encouragement to mentor leads, mentors, associate teachers, new teachers and teacher candidates.
