Course Description
In the Preliminary and HSC courses, students will study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.
Why study this course
Music occupies a significant place in world cultures and the recorded history of all civilisations. It possesses a unique symbol system that uses sound to imply meaning and convey information. Music has the capacity to cross cultural and societal boundaries. It plays a variety of important roles in the cultural and spiritual lives of people, which is reflected in its prominent place in society and its immense contribution to the global economy. At an individual level, music is a medium of personal expression that enables the sharing of ideas, feelings and experiences. All students have musical abilities and potential that can be built upon.
Topics
Students study three topics in each year of the course. Topics are chosen from a list of 21 which covers a range of styles, periods and genres.
In addition to core studies in performance, composition, musicology and aural, students select three electives from any combination of performance, composition and musicology. These electives must represent each of the three topics studied in the course. Students selecting Composition electives will be required to compile a portfolio of work as part of the process of preparing a submitted work. The portfolio may be requested by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards to validate authorship of the submitted work.
Post School Options
The purpose of Music 1 is to provide students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes within a broad musical context and encourage the desire to continue learning in formal and informal music settings after school. The course provides students with opportunities to engage in a range of musical styles, including contemporary popular music, and for many, it will serve as a pathway for further training and employment in the music industry or in contemporary music fields. Career choices can range from, Musician, Education, Theatre, Film, Television & Radio, Sound technician, Studio engineer, Entertainment Law, Stage Manager, Composer, Copywriter, Instrument Technician etc.
