Through Music 1, students:

listen to, analyse and respond to music from varied cultural, historical and social contexts to investigate how style, convention and context shape meaning
create and compose music by experimenting with varied approaches, technologies and media to generate and shape musical ideas with expressive intent and purpose.
Why study this course
The Music 1 Years 11–12 Syllabus develops students’ musicianship through informed listening and creative practice, including improvisation, digital experimentation, and cultural music-making. Students build a broad understanding of diverse repertoire, engaging with music through aural, oral and symbolic forms while using technology to create and communicate ideas. Through performance, composition and listening, they strengthen skills in analysis, collaboration and problem-solving, and are prepared for further study and pathways into music and creative industries such as performance, production, sound design and arts management.
Topics
Students perform, compose, listen, analyse and respond to music to develop their understanding of how music is organised, interpreted and communicated across diverse social, historical and cultural contexts. Through the study of selected repertoire, they build aural skills and deepen their knowledge of musical language, including stylistic features and rhythmic, melodic and harmonic structures, while exploring how compositional techniques and expressive devices convey meaning and identity. Students apply this understanding in their own creative practice through improvisation, songwriting and composition, using voice, instruments and digital tools to shape original ideas, and further extend their skills by analysing and engaging with a range of styles, genres and traditions to examine how musical ideas are constructed and communicated.
