Course Description
The English Studies course is designed to provide students with opportunities to become competent, confident and engaged communicators and to study and enjoy a breadth and variety of texts in English. English Studies focuses on supporting students to refine their skills and knowledge in English and consolidate their English literacy skills to enhance their personal, educational, social and vocational lives.
Why study this course
English Studies is different to other HSC English courses in that it is not concerned with deep literary analysis of texts, but is focused on gaining a practical understanding of English in the context of a student’s real-life experiences. English Studies is generally designed for students seeking vocational pathways who are seeking engaging and relevant ways to improve their communication skills and their understanding of the world around them and their place in it. There is no requirement for compulsory exams in English Studies and a limited number of assessments. It is well suited for students who are looking for links to English and everyday life and relates directly to work in other subjects and students’ work and other external learning experiences.

Post School Options
English Studies is a great option for students who are considering a vocational pathway following school. It is possible for students to elect to sit a HSC examination for this course if they wish to obtain an ATAR, but this course is usually selected by students who are not seeking to follow an ATAR pathway. English Studies is best suited to students who want to seek a trade, continue their education at TAFE or another vocational educational provider or enter the workplace after the completion of Year 12.
