SPANISH I COLLEGE PREP

This course initiates the development of proficiency skills in Spanish. It stresses conversation, self-expression, and an understanding of Latin culture as it covers exciting relatable topics common to our teens today. Many authentic resources such as video clips, songs, stories, games, and more are introduced at this level to enhance proficiency.

SPANISH II COLLEGE PREP

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Spanish I CP


This course continues to foster proficiency in Spanish. As a continuation of skills developed in Level I, Spanish II will infuse interpersonal and presentational skills with many interactive activities covering a variety of present-day topics. Students delve into deeper understanding and comparisons of Hispanic cultures. Authentic realia, video, music, reading, and other interactive resources are incorporated to increase higher understanding, develop more communication skills, and proficiency of the language.

SPANISH II HONORS

Spanish II Honors builds upon the knowledge and skills established in Spanish I. Students continue practicing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with a strong emphasis on oral and written precision and immersion in the target language. Course materials utilize authentic texts to facilitate cultural appreciation and understanding of Spanish history. Authentic realia, video, music, reading, and other interactive resources are incorporated to increase higher understanding, develop more communication skills, and better proficiency of the language. This course is mostly conducted in the target language.

SPANISH III COLLEGE PREP

Student use of spoken language is increased via interpersonal and presentational skills. In this course, students will relate many topics and ideas and share thoughts, plans, ideas in a variety of tenses. Authentic resources are used to enhance skills as well as a source of research to support ideas. Many interactive activities are infused in the lessons to foster an increase in conversation and communication in the target language.

SPANISH III HONORS

SPANISH IV COLLEGE PREP

This course stresses interactive communication and oral proficiency. Reading and discussing current events, history, music, and the art of Spain and Latin or South America enhance vocabulary and grammatical structures.

SPANISH IV HONORS

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Spanish III CP or Honors w/ B or higher + Teacher Recommendation


This course stresses interactive communication and oral proficiency. Reading and discussing literary excerpts, history, current events, music, and the art of Spain and Latin or South America. Enhance vocabulary and grammatical structures. Writing skills are developed for compositions. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish.


Dual Enrollment Opportunity: For this course, students have the option to register for Seton Hall Project Acceleration. The tuition is approximately $300.00 (per semester) for six college credits through Seton Hall University for those students who successfully complete the full-year course (both fall and spring semester).

SPANISH V HONORS

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Spanish IV Honors + Teacher Recommendation.


In this course, students gain confidence and competence as they progress along the proficiency continuum to independently communicate information, make presentations, and express thoughts about familiar and unfamiliar topics. Students devise substantial meaning from culturally authentic materials such as artwork, brochures, commercials, news articles, etc. typically understood by advanced-level listeners and readers. Students identify and investigate typical products related to everyday life in the target language and the learner’s own culture. They use their insights to infer perspectives (attitudes, values, beliefs) of the target culture society. Students will also exchange information in spontaneous spoken or written conversations and some discussions on a variety of familiar and concrete topics that they have researched. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish. Students are expected to communicate in Spanish.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Prerequisite(s): Grade of B or higher in Spanish IV Honors + Teacher Recommendation + Structured Summer Assignment

Requirement(s): Students are required to take the AP exam


Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture follow the prescribed objectives, offerings, and activities required by the College Entrance Examination Board. Advanced Placement serves the interest of the students who wish to pursue college-level studies while still in secondary school and possibly shorten and/or complete their college language requirements. AP Spanish Language and Culture are intended for students who wish to gain confidence and competence as they integrate their language skills. The course content reflects a wide variety of academic and cultural topics such as the arts, history, current events, literature, sports, etc. Students work exclusively with culturally authentic materials across the three modes of communication: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish with students expected to communicate exclusively in Spanish in class. Students will be expected to independently complete intensive projects, in addition to regular assignments. Students will also write numerous essays, create presentations, and engage in meaningful conversations both prepared and impromptu. Students are required to take the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam. Many colleges will grant credit and/or appropriate advanced credits to students who score well on the exam.
