GERMAN I COLLEGE PREP

Full Year | 5 credits | Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite(s): None

This course develops all language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing skills with an emphasis on communication. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. Fluency and pronunciation are cultivated through conversation, self-expression, and oral dialogue. Level I students are introduced to German language and culture through the topical themes of Greetings and Introductions, Family Structures, School Life, Food, Population and Demographics, and Nature and Climate using a variety of authentic text, audio and visual materials and resources.

GERMAN II COLLEGE PREP

Full Year | 5 credits | Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of German I CP


German II CP builds upon the knowledge and skills established in German I. Students continue to develop the basic level skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in German. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. This course emphasizes vocabulary building and greater fluency by utilizing communication skills with everyday concepts such as Self-image and Technology, Customs and Values, Health and Nutrition, Fashion and Design, Entertainment, and Environmental Issues. In addition, German culture continues to be woven into the lessons and will be explored through authentic texts and activities.

GERMAN II HONORS

Full Year | 5 credits | Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of German I CP w/ B or higher + Teacher Recommendation

German II Honors builds upon the knowledge and skills established in German I. Students continue to develop listening, reading, speaking and writing skills with a strong emphasis on oral and written communication with increasing precision by immersion in the target language. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. This course emphasizes continued vocabulary building and greater fluency by utilizing communication skills in everyday concepts such as Self-image and Technology, Customs and Values, Health and Nutrition, Fashion and Design, Entertainment, and Environmental Issues. In addition, German culture continues to be woven into the lessons and will be explored through authentic texts and activities.

GERMAN III COLLEGE PREP

German III CP builds upon the knowledge and skills established in German II. Students continue to develop skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in German. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. This course emphasizes continued vocabulary building and greater fluency by utilizing communication skills in everyday concepts such as Travel and Leisure, Personal Interests, Innovations, Human Geography, Economic Issues, and Architecture. In addition, German culture continues to be woven into the lessons and will be explored through authentic texts and activities.

GERMAN III HONORS

Full Year | 5 credits | Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of German II Honors or CP w/ B or higher + Teacher Recommendation


Student use of the spoken and written language is further developed with the help of selected topics. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. More advanced vocabulary and grammatical structures are introduced with an emphasis on communication through a variety of writing and speaking activities and class discussions. Listening comprehension is reinforced through various audio recordings, videos and German language films. The course is conducted primarily in German with some grammar explanations in English. Students are expected and encouraged to communicate in German.

GERMAN IV COLLEGE PREP

Full Year | 5 credits | Grade Level: 11, 12

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of German III CP or Honors


The German IV CP course continues to build vocabulary through the same six AP themes that serve as a basis throughout all levels of language study. Students will continue to develop all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing with increasing ability to describe themselves and their viewpoints in both written and spoken forms. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. There will be emphasis on compositional writing and presentational speaking at this level.

GERMAN IV HONORS

Full Year | 5 credits | Grade Level: 11, 12

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of German III Honors or CP w/ B or higher + Teacher Recommendation


The German IV Honors course continues to build vocabulary through the same six AP themes that serve as a basis throughout all levels of language study. Students continue to develop listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. Basic grammar points are reviewed with an emphasis on increased accuracy and improving communication. Students will begin to write compositions and keep a journal in German. A variety of authentic materials are used including short stories, poetry, videos, song lyrics, television episodes, and various online resources. Cultural topics are covered within the thematic context. Class discussions are in German with some grammar explanations in English. Students are expected to communicate in German.


Dual Enrollment Opportunity: For this course, students have the option to register for Seton Hall Project Acceleration. The tuition is approximately $300.00 (per semester) for up to six college credits through Seton Hall University for those students who successfully complete the full-year course (both fall and spring semesters). No additional work is required beyond the course curriculum.

GERMAN V HONORS

Students continue to develop listening and reading comprehension, and increased fluency in speaking and writing. This course reviews and reinforces basic grammar structures with a focus on improving accuracy while keeping an emphasis on communication. Students will demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. Students will write short essays and keep a journal in German. A variety of materials are used including short stories, poetry, song lyrics, television episodes, videos, news and current events taken from various Internet resources. Cultural topics are explored within the thematic content. The class is conducted in German, with some grammar explanations in English. Students are expected to communicate in German.


Dual Enrollment Opportunity: For this course, students have the option to register for Seton Hall Project Acceleration. The tuition is approximately $300 per semester for up to six college credits through Seton Hall University for those students who successfully complete the full-year course (both fall and spring semesters). ADVANCED PLACEMENT GERMAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Advanced Placement German follows the prescribed objectives, offerings, and activities recommended by the College Entrance Examination Board. Advanced Placement serves the interest of students who wish to pursue college-level studies while still in secondary school and possibly shorten and/or complete their college language requirements. The AP German course helps prepare students to demonstrate their level of proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. Students continue to strengthen listening and reading comprehension, writing skills and oral fluency. In addition to AP Practice Tests from the College Board, a variety of authentic materials are used including: internet news, magazine articles, short stories, poetry, song lyrics, TV episodes, commercials, videos and interactive websites. Cultural topics are explored within the context of lesson content. with an emphasis on making comparisons. Grammar is reinforced within the context of themes covered. The course is conducted entirely in German with some grammar explanations in English, with students expected to speak German exclusively in class.


Students in the course will be required to independently complete an intensive assignment each marking period (i.e. to view a movie, complete reading assignments with accompanying activities, etc.), in addition to regular, extensive homework assignments; keep a journal in German and write and edit at least 1-2 essays each marking period; make oral presentations in German. Students are encouraged to access and use German language media (social media, music, video, video games, etc.) in their free time. Students are required to take the AP exam. Many colleges will grant credit and/or appropriate advanced placement to students who score well on the AP exam.
