As advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies continue to reshape numerous facets of daily life, the School District of Palm Beach County recognizes the potential benefits these technologies can offer for improved instruction and operational efficiency. However, the District also acknowledges concerns surrounding their potential impact on student learning, motivation, and broader societal implications.
It is crucial that the school District strikes a balance between leveraging the capabilities of AI and maintaining a strong emphasis on the importance of foundational skills and human values in education.
Adopted by the School Board on April 15, 2026, District Policy 2.505 "Artificial Intelligence" provides the operational and legal framework for safe, ethical, and innovative AI integration across the School District of Palm Beach County. The full policy can be accessed here.
Policy Summary
Policy 2.505 establishes district-wide standards to promote digital innovation while safeguarding student privacy, data security, and academic integrity. The policy governs responsible AI usage for both employees and students across all instructional and administrative settings.
Key Guidelines for Staff and Students
Staff Guidelines: Requires a "human-in-the-loop" for critical decisions like grades or discipline, strictly protects student privacy and PII, and restricts AI use to secure SDPBC Technology Clearinghouse (TCH)-approved tools.
Student Guidelines: Allows District-approved AI tools for learning under teacher guidance with proper citation, while banning AI on standardized assessments and prohibiting deepfakes or data fabrication.
Policy Resources
The Innovate & Safeguard: SDPBC AI Guidebook serves as the practical complement and implementation roadmap to District Policy 2.505. While Policy 2.505 establishes the District's mandatory rules and legal requirements ("the what"), the Guidebook provides the step-by-step methodologies and classroom strategies ("the how") for safe, ethical, and effective integration. It equips educators and students with "Traffic Signal" frameworks to communicate and manage classroom AI usage levels, data privacy and PII protection protocols, proper citation guidelines, and practical tools for academic integrity and accessible learning. The Innovate & Safeguard: SDPBC AI Guidebook can be accessed here.
Policy Training
Information about Policy 2.505 is included in the Annual IT Security Awareness FY27 compliance training, which must be completed by all SDPBC employees.
Additionally, The Department of Educational Technology has developed an asynchronous eLearning course providing a practical breakdown of District Policy 2.505, student data safety, and AI integration strategies. Designed for Palm Beach County educators and staff, AI Integration in SDPBC: Policy 2.505 and Best Practices is self-paced course offering a practical guide to using generative artificial intelligence tools in daily work.
Teachers and staff can register in eLearning to enroll in the course. 10 professional development points are available for attendees completing the course and submitting the implementation activity.
