Pearls of the Sea

This term, Toya from the Hastings Contemporary, came in to school to work with the Year 4 children on their Pearls of the Sea project.  She showed the children how to complete a "stick and ink" and some watercolour techniques on illustrations of the British coastal flora and fauna.

To begin with, the children were asked to draw whilst just looking at the picture and not looking down at their paper.  This was a really tricky concept for them, but they all managed to complete the task successfully.

The children had the opportunity to use bamboo sticks to create their masterpieces, a technique very similar to what Quentin Blake uses when he illustrates. They had to be very careful when using the ink as it can stain and they then had to wait for them to dry before using watercolours. Using the watercolours gave the children the chance to try out their transparent and opaque skills.

Toya has now taken the paintings to the art gallery for an exhibition that the children will be able to attend in June 2024.
