Year 5 & 6 Learning

It has been a fast and exciting Term 3 for Years 5 & 6; full of endeavour, purpose and positivity.

Reading has been plentiful and encouraging; in history pupils examined famous historical events such as the Industrial Revolution (1760-1840) and discovered that things do not simply ‘happen’ without reason; in science they learned about living things and their habitats and in PSHE pupils focused on 'Dreams and Goals' and discussed their aspirations for the future, both academically and personally.

Year 5 continue to develop into skilled writers, further developing their array of writers' skills including appropriate use of vocabulary, direct/indirect speech and how to generate pace with a sentence of three powerful, emotive verbs. They have learned how to write 'a story of fear' with a focus on action and in non-fiction writing they developed the skill to write a persuasive letter to try and convince readers of something, like an opinion or idea.

In maths, Year 5 have developed their skills and knowledge of area and perimeter, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, and have expanded their knowledge of angles including how to draw angles with a protractor.

They have been inspired by the fiction work of Nizrana Farook and her adventurous story 'The Girl Who Stole an Elephant'.  In non-fiction they have been amazed by the wondrous feats of famous real life explorers in Alasitair Humphrey’s Great Adventurers. They learned about Aplsey Cherry-Garrard who explored Antarctica and Captain Scott’s famous adventure in 1912 and Dervla Murphy who cycled around the world in 1965.

Year 6 continue to work ahead towards the SATS. The children have worked hard on improving their maths arithmetic skills and in developing their maths vocabulary in order to successfully tackle maths reasoning questions. In reading we have focused on inference question answers using the text, in order to ensure that longer questions can be successfully answered.  The term has finished with the children sitting their final mock SATS paper, which will be used by the Year 6 team to ensure that the teaching can be adapted to the children's needs.
