Welcome to our UNCRC page!
At Riverside School, we are committed to ensuring that every child and young person’s rights are respected, understood, and promoted. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is a global agreement that sets out the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights of children.
The UNCRC was adopted by the United Nations in 1989 and outlines 42 rights that every child should have, including:
The right to education
The right to protection from harm
The right to play, leisure, and culture
The right to express opinions and be heard
It provides a framework to ensure children’s voices are valued and their needs are met.
At Riverside, we embed the UNCRC across school life:
Inclusive Learning: Every pupil has the opportunity to learn in a safe, supportive, and respectful environment.
Pupil Voice: We encourage children to share their views through assemblies, pupil councils, and regular discussions.
Equality and Respect: We celebrate diversity and ensure every child is treated fairly, with dignity and respect.
Safeguarding: Staff are trained to protect children from harm and ensure their well-being is at the heart of all decisions.
We believe that children should have a say in decisions that affect them. At Riverside School:
Pupil councils discuss school improvement ideas and initiatives
Feedback is regularly collected through surveys and class discussions
Students are supported to understand their rights and how to advocate for themselves
We are proud to be working towards our Bronze Rights Respecting Schools Award, which recognises our ongoing commitment to the UNCRC. Through this process, we are:
Embedding children’s rights into everyday school life
Ensuring pupils understand their rights and responsibilities
Promoting pupil participation in decision-making
Strengthening partnerships between school, parents, and the wider community
Achieving this award will highlight Riverside as a school that actively champions children’s rights.
