Over the past four years of pursuing journalism at OHS, I have learned so much not only about the field of journalism but also about myself. When I first started as a freshman, I didn’t really know how to do anything remotely related to journalism. I didn’t know how to properly edit videos, work with a camera, or put together and tell a good story. I was basically starting from the very beginning and I had to learn everything on my own step by step. In my very first episode of The Season, I covered our boys basketball team and their games against DeSoto Central and crosstown rival Lafayette. At just 14 years old, I walked into both games without really knowing what I was doing. I remember not really knowing where to sit, what types of shots I needed, and how I was even going to turn my footage into a story. That experience so early on was the start of everything I’ve been able to learn since then. Over the past four years, I’ve pushed myself to learn new skills and improve every day. I’ve spent hours filming games, editing videos, writing scripts, and trying to make each project better than the last. Saying the process was difficult would be a huge understatement. Learning how to film and edit content well is very challenging, especially when you’re starting with no experience at all. There were definitely times where I felt frustrated when something didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to or I continued making mistakes over and over again. Even with the rough start, I’m incredibly grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to continue pursuing my passion for journalism in the world of sports. Covering athletics has given me so many experiences that I never would have had otherwise. Whether it’s sitting in the freezing rain at a football game, staying up late or even all night trying to finish a project, traveling with a team, or something as simple as writing a hype video script, every part of the process has helped me grow to be who I am today. Through all of this, I’ve realized that journalism is something I truly love. It has taught me creativity, how to be a leader, and how to tell meaningful stories about the people and events around me. Now, as my time at OHS comes to an end, I want to push myself even harder and continue improving my skills as I move into the next chapter of my life. I'm so excited to keep learning and see where my passion for sports journalism will take me in the future.
