Image Editing Features

Once the photographs are taken on the camera, there are a range of different editing features that can be used to enhance the image. There are simple editing features to correct brightness and colour and other editing features such as sharpness adjustments and red eye removal. To enhance the photographs that are taken, we will be using Adobe Photoshop.

Simple editing techniques are:

  • Brightness-to edit the colour of the light in the photograph, referring to the overall lightness or darkness of the photograph.
  • Contrast-to edit the different tones in the photograph. This will also affect how sharply the colours stand out from one another.
  • Exposure-to edit the brightness of the photograph. This targets the brightest parts of the photograph and makes them brighter.

  • Red eye Removal-to edit a photograph to remove red pupils. This happens when the flash is close to the lens in low lighting.
  • Colour correction-to edit by correcting several aspects of a photograph to make it more appealing. Includes adjustments in contrast, exposure, and white balance.
  • Hue-to edit aspects of colour in the photograph described as "red or "yellow".
  • Saturation-to edit the strength of colour, due to absence of black, white or grey.
  • Gamma Levels-to edit the photograph to store tones more efficiently. It refers to the translation between our eye's light sensitivity and that of the camera. Adjusting gamma levels redistributes tonal levels closer to how our eyes perceive them.
  • RGB-to edit the red, green and blue channels from 0 to 255 to change the colour of the photograph. It combines the three colours to produce different colours. These are best used for digital work.
  • CYMK-to edit the cyan, magenta, yellow and black colours, It uses these colours as filters to subtract amounts of RGB from white light to produce other colours. These are best used in printing.
