There will be 2 courses available and students will be guided towards one of these after they have opted for PE
This is an ideal course if you want to study good health and fitness practices and have an understanding of working in the sector.
Learners will gain a broad understanding of Health and Fitness including the following:
• How our body systems work. How our health and fitness can be improved with our lifestyles, diet and exercise
The course will have 2 lessons of theory and 3 lessons of practical every 2 weeks
Unit 1: Introduction to body systems and principles of training in health and fitness
This is worth 40% of the marks and is a one and a half hour written exam. It includes topics such as the Skeletal, Muscular, Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Energy systems as well as looking at the effect exercise has on health and fitness.
Unit 2: Preparing and planning for health and fitness.
This is worth 60% of the marks and is a synpotic project. It includes studying, researching and writing about topics such as lifestyle factors, heart rate training zones, fitness testing and planning a health and fitness programme
• A Level in Physical Education and Sport, • Level 2 or 3 Technical Certificate in Sport & Physical Activity
• Apprenticeships in occupations within the Health & Fitness sectors such as Health Assistants, Fitness Instructors or Personal Trainers.

This is an ideal choice for you if you enjoy the theoretical aspects of PE and are a very competent performer at a variety of sports. The work is enjoyable and demanding and you will be helped to achieve the high standards demanded in this course.
To do this course you will have already demonstrated in PE lessons that you have the necessary ability and commitment levels
*Please Note: GCSE PE will only be offered on the basis of sufficient student uptake and staff availability.
The course will have 3 lessons of theory and 2 lessons of practical every 2 weeks
Unit 1 (Theoretical Aspects) = 60% of the marks completed by 2 x 1 hour examinations
· Participation, exercise and training, Anatomy, Physiology and Performance, Socio cultural studies
Unit 2 (Practical Aspects) = 40% of the marks
· Practical Performance – students are assessed in 3 practical activities from a list of individual and team sports.
· Analysis of performance – Students will be required to speak and write confidently about a practical activity they are being assessed in and be able to plan and carry out an effective training plan which will improve their overall fitness and performance.
