Mathematics is 100% exam assessed at the end of Year 11.
The examination board is "Edexcel"
You will sit three papers;
Paper 1 is non-calculator.
Paper 2 and 3 are both calculator.
Each paper is 1 hour, 30 minutes.
Each paper is 80 marks.
Your total score over the three papers will determine your grade.
It is important to know that Mathematics has a Tier system. You will sit either Foundation or Higher.
You can gain grades 1-5 on the Foundation tier.
You can gain grades 4-9 on the Higher tier.
To gain entry into some courses beyond high school you must sit the Higher tier. For example, many colleges require a grade 6 in Mathematics if you wish to do a Science course.
All further education courses and careers will need good numerical literacy as well as good problem solving skills. Most will require a good passing grade in Maths GCSE.

For many people, GCSE Maths will be a gatekeeper – if you want to do a certain job, then you will need a good grade in GCSE Maths. You might make an excellent police officer, but without GCSE maths, lots of forces won’t accept you. This could mean years spent resitting your GCSE Maths, or it could mean you miss out altogether.
