Where Learning Begins: Our Entry Point
Every IEYC unit begins with an Entry Point, a special experience designed to spark children’s curiosity and introduce the Big Idea at the heart of their learning. It might be a surprising object, an exciting challenge, a story, a mystery to solve, or a hands-on experience that makes children wonder, ‘What is this?’ or ‘What could happen next?’
From that first spark of curiosity, the learning journey begins! The Entry Point invites children to share their ideas and theories, ask questions, make connections, and investigate the Big Idea through play, exploration, and inquiry. With thoughtfully selected resources and engaging learning spaces, children are supported in becoming active participants in shaping their own learning journey.
Take a look at how our different grade levels stepped into their new units of learning this month!
Onde a aprendizagem começa: nosso Entry Point

Pre-Nursery
The Pre-Nursery children had a wonderful surprise when they found a suitcase in their classroom filled with clothes that would fit someone much smaller than themselves! How delightful it was to discover that it belonged to a Traveler Bear who had journeyed all the way from the USA to Rio de Janeiro to embark on an exciting adventure with our little ones.
As wonderful hosts, the children soon began thinking about a cosy place for their new friend, whom they lovingly named Buddy. His house is becoming more and more adorable as the children add their own personal touches, including a huge painting that is brightening up the walls.
The children are taking very good care of Buddy, preparing healthy meals and making sure he has a comfortable bed. They are excited to show him more of Rio, introduce him to their families, and they can’t wait for their turn to take Buddy home!
Nursery
We might not know what to do with cardboard boxes, tubes, yarn, buttons, and packing materials, but the Nursery children certainly do! After exploring the children’s book Amelia’s Loose Parts, they were surprised to find a large box and a message from Amelia, encouraging them to be as creative as she has been. Since then, they have used simple, everyday objects to build robots, musical instruments, and delicious ice cream cones for their cardboard Food Truck. Just like Amelia, they are discovering that there are lots of unwanted objects all around us that can be transformed into beautiful, authentic creations.
The children have also been enjoying the play areas in their classroom, where provision is thoughtfully added and adapted to extend their experiences and make their play even more meaningful. Whether taking on the roles of builders and using shaving cream as cement, becoming artists and designing an amazing texture wall, or acting as shop assistants and customers selling and buying ice cream, they are developing their creativity, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills through meaningful, imaginative play. It is wonderful to see how much learning can happen when children are given the freedom, resources, and opportunities to turn their ideas into reality!
Junior kinder
The Junior Kinder children’s art adventure started with an invitation to explore a Mystery Gallery, where masterpieces from some of the world’s most famous artists were hidden, ready to be revealed in the coming weeks as the little ones developed their own artistic journeys. The children were then introduced to their Art Studio, a creative space filled with a wide range of art supplies and materials, including paint, crayons, pastels, felt-tipped pens, and collage materials, inviting them to experiment and express their creativity in many different ways.
Since then, the children have explored an exciting world of colour, shapes, and patterns. They got messy with paint in the style of Pollock, created Rangoli patterns inspired by an Indian tradition, explored buildings and castles just like Paul Klee, and went on safari for inspiration for their Tinga Tinga artwork, a style of African art depicting features of the African landscape. Mondrian’s shapes and lines inspired experiments with mixing primary colours, while Kandinsky’s idea that everything starts with a dot provided a wonderful provocation. Through these experiences, our little artists are discovering that art can take many forms and that anyone can be an artist!
Senior kinder
Little did the Senior Kinder children know that a special mission was waiting for them at the beginning of the School year. A note from an anonymous superhero asked the children to look after a mystery box and keep it safe from a villain called the ‘Mighty Freeze’. The children were still discussing what might be inside when the villain appeared. Although he succeeded in freezing the little ones for a while, as the spell wore off, the children managed to send him away and opened the box to find superhero masks and an invitation to join the Superhero League.
The children have been exploring what makes a superhero, as they are committed to doing an exceptional job in their new role. Is it their amazing powers? Is it because they like helping people? Exciting stories, such as the tale of a potato that saves the planet from deadly peas, have taught them an important lesson: fruits and vegetables can be great heroes too, protecting us from getting sick. Likewise, community workers are everyday heroes, making our lives safer, easier, or simply a little more practical. Now that they have made their own cuffs, headbands, and special T-shirts, our superheroes are doing their best to answer every call from their Superhero Den and help anyone in need!
