The start of the new School year has been truly exciting in Middle School! From the enthusiasm of the new 5th graders, who are still settling into their new routine, to the 8th graders experiencing their final, already nostalgic year of Middle School, our students have brought a wonderfully positive and contagious energy to our building. I increasingly see students in the hallways engaged in learning, laughing, studying, and playing, and it has been a special experience to witness.
We began the 2026–2027 School year with the goal of defining the culture we want to maintain and build together with our students. The effort to align expectations and rules, while simultaneously broadening our focus on interdisciplinary learning, has set the tone for the work ahead. Responsible computer use, for instance, reflects the highly relevant learning experience we are building. At the same time, seeing our library packed during lunch breaks with students from different grade levels reading, playing, and coloring together, makes me incredibly optimistic about our students' growth.
On a personal level, this first month has also been an opportunity to reconnect with what it means to be part of the OLM community. Students, teachers, staff, and families have welcomed me in an amazing way. As an educator, it is inspiring to see families so deeply engaged in their children's education and to realize the difference that partnership makes. Expectations for this School year couldn't be higher, and I am thrilled about everything we will build together!
Technology Policy
Our new technology policy has been in place for this new academic year. Computers, earphones, and other technology devices can only be used in class when instructed by the teacher. Signs are being used to indicate to students whether or not they should bring their devices to class, in order to avoid misuse of technology.

Science - 7th and 8th Grade
In Middle School Science, students engage in active investigation through lab experiments, class demonstrations, collaborative projects, interdisciplinary activities, and academic competitions to foster curiosity and critical thinking. This quarter, 7th Graders applied the scientific method to physics concepts by analyzing force and motion using digital simulators, testing variables with objects rolling down a ramp, and calculating running speeds in a joint lab with Physical Education to connect motion physics to athletic fitness, sports rules, and fairness in competitions. Meanwhile, 8th Graders explored the structure and properties of matter through mass and volume demonstrations, lab stations testing magnetism, solubility, polarity, and other properties, and a collaborative project building an interactive Periodic Table highlighting real-world element applications.
Book Club
Reading is great!
The Book Club activity, led by Middle School Portuguese teachers, offers students a chance to develop a love for reading in an enjoyable way. Sessions have already kicked off with an introduction to books across various genres and a fun activity where students try to convince a classmate to read a specific book based solely on first impressions from the cover. It is sure to be a year filled with learning, sharing experiences, and reading! Take a look:
Clube do Livro
Veja:

Studying grammar can be fun, too!
Seventh-grade students kicked off the School year by learning new material in the best possible way: researching grammar concepts, reading, writing, and sharing their knowledge with classmates. In addition, the class took part in a group competition and wrapped up the learning cycle with the popular game "Who Am I?"—which involved trying to guess what was written on a sticky note by applying the concepts of phrases, clauses, and sentences learned in previous lessons.
Language changes!
The 8th Grade class began the School year by learning that the Portuguese language varies based on several factors, including region, level of education, the passage of time, and the speaker's situation. To explore this, after extensive research and discussion, the students prepared and presented lessons to their classmates on the topic of "linguistic varieties." They also participated in a guided debate on "linguistic prejudice," which sparked deep reflection on the importance of respecting different ways of speaking and understanding that there is no single "right" or "wrong" way—only the form most appropriate for a given context. A língua muda!
