OLH/SL School Nurse - 🚨 Drills & Safety

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority at Our Lady of Hope/ St. Luke School. We follow all local, state, and AOB regulations for conducting fire and emergency safety drills.

· Fire drills are done each month for a total of 10 fire drills per school year. One drill annually is done in conjunction with our local Fire Department; this drill was done in October and we did a great job!

· Emergency drills are also done throughout the year so staff and students are familiar with what actions to take in the event of other emergencies. We follow the, "i love you guys" foundation Standard Response Protocol for emergency drills. These are the terms, symbols, and actions for each of the Emergency situations we practice.

Staff and Students are educated on what response to take in the event of these emergency situations.

Another term you may hear is a Reverse Evacuation, which is actually a Secure Drill. You may also hear the terms, “Duck, Cover, and Hold” and “Twister Drill,” which are actually Shelter drills for severe weather.

In accordance with regulations, each year, we practice three (3) lockdown drills and at least one of each other type of emergency drill. As we prepare for each emergency drill, you will be made aware, and immediately following each drill, we will let you know how the drill went.

Any student who has had a traumatic event and may be triggered by a Lockdown drill, has the opportunity to opt out of participation in the lockdown drills. We will still need to ensure that those students know what to do in an emergency, but they have will have the option to receive that information in a different way. Please reach out to me directly if you would like your child to opt out of participation in lockdown drills.
