Talk About It!

• It’s everyone’s job to keep our school safe and secure. 

• Families should talk to students about safety and security at school and at home.

• See something, say something! Reinforce with your student the importance of notifying school staff of any possible safety threat.

Plan

• Make sure your student knows their full name, address and guardian’s phone number. 

• Practice the route your student takes to walk to school or to their bus stop. 

Monitor 

• Monitor your student’s social media and online activity. 

• Communicate with your child’s school or teacher if your student is in any type of emotional distress.

• Counselors, school psychologists and social workers are here to help.

Drills

• All schools are required to perform 2 security drills each semester (4 total), with the first one occurring in the first 15 days of the semester. 

• There are additional drills for evacuation, sheltering and holding in classrooms during a critical situation. 

Training

• OKCPS staff are required to complete a series of training through our online learning management system.

• The training is designed to equip our staff with the knowledge needed to make quick decisions in the event of an emergency.

Preparedness

• Each school has an emergency response guide specific to their campus. Building leaders are responsible for executing the plan in the event of an emergency. 

• Additionally, OKCPS partners with local law enforcement to collaborate regarding emergency response.
