Key Club is a student-led club under the lead organization Kiwanis. Our members make the world a better place through service, which not only earns them leadership opportunities, but volunteer hours as well. The goal of Key Club is to provide students with volunteer opportunities as well as the chance to promote caring as a way of life. The opportunities we bring students entail being involved with and taking care of the community. Some of the initiatives we have already begun include creating digital Christmas activities for Santa 4 Seniors, picking up trash in the neighbourhood, shovelling neighbours' driveways, and writing digital Christmas cards for isolated seniors.
The club is able to provide students with volunteer opportunities, which can be hard to find with COVID-19. With the resources Kiwanis provided to us, we are able to still let students claim volunteer hours while doing good in the world. Furthermore, Key Club is a student-led club, so there are so many opportunities to build leadership skills. Key Club members are even able to get involved in the district and international level.
Grade 10 students Rose, Cherry, and Lilian, leaders of the OCV Key Club, share what motivated them to run this club:
“We joined the club for the first time last year. At Nepean H.S., Key Club is a student-led club, and the leaders of the club were all in Grade 12 and since they were graduating last year, they required new students to step up and take their positions. Us three we decided why not? Furthermore, it was a great leadership opportunity and learning experience as well. We thought since this year it would be even harder to find volunteer opportunities and we would be doing our learning online, we were determined to get this club running to help other students who might still be needing some volunteer hours. Thanks to our teacher supervisor, Mr. Regragui, and with help from the District Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Key Club, as well as OCV, we were able to get Key Club running.” - Rose Chen
“I started this club with fellow student leaders, Rose and Lilian, because it seemed like a great opportunity to gain leadership experiences and earn volunteer hours at the same time. I also wanted to do something to help my community instead of sitting around at home, especially during the pandemic.” - Cherry Ke
“I decided to continue the club because I didn't want the pandemic to keep people from having the Key Club experience. Over the summer, we had agreed that now, more than ever, people need volunteers. I like how being in a Key Club allows you to extend a helping hand throughout your community and outside of it too! And, to be honest, I didn't want the Key Club in our area to end at our generation of high school students. I hope that the Key Club at the OCV can help bring a sense of normalcy and friendly connections despite us being separated by the web.” - Lilian Cheng
Members of OCV Key Club share why they joined and what they hope to accomplish:
“I joined the key club because I wanted to be more active in the community. I hope to bring the community closer together and spread a little joy during these hard times. I like how flexible it is, and I also like how we do a variety of different things!” - Melissa E.
“I joined key club because I want to make a difference in the world. The world is a big place, and to tackle it, you start with one community at a time. I wanted to help out and volunteer my time and effort to noble initiatives. I hope to really grow as a person and help out wherever and whoever I can so they can share the same journey and hopefully be inspired and continue to bring a change into the world.” - Ibrahim G.
For more information on this club, feel free to contact the student leaders via email (Lilian Cheng , Rose Chen , Cherry Ke), and they’ll be more than happy to help you! If this is something you would like to do or take interest in feel free to join us. It's a great opportunity if you want volunteer hours and to gain leadership experience and be involved in your community. We meet on Wednesdays at 11:45, and our classroom code is jchvuam. Everybody's welcome!
