It’s very important to join clubs because it's one of the ways that students can engage in social interaction with other students. It also allows you to have a specific time in the week where you can engage in the activities you're passionate about. Clubs at the OCV are one of a kind with students who are hard working and want to take the clubs to new heights. They also are a great way for students to interact with one another. Students in OCV are more engaged in extracurricular activities because they have more free time and less stress from going to school, so in the OCV clubs there is a higher chance that a student will find a group of people who share the same interests.
Film Crew is a crew for the OCV News and it’s all about making films, editing them and having a bunch of fun. In this club, you can do tasks that interest you in film-making, such as production, distribution, post production and much more. If you are a person that likes to take initiative then this is your chance, because film crew also has positions such as a head or assistant head for any of the jobs.
Now that we know a little about what our club is actually about, let's see what our goals are. This club is to have fun, learn new things, and take part in things you have never tried before. For example, I didn’t know how to write a script for films but I learned by looking at other students' work and helping out in the making. You don’t need to stress out about anything in this club. Basically if you are able to achieve the task you have selected to do that is awesome, but if you are stuck and need help don’t worry there are other people in the crew that have the same positions and will be able to help you, so don’t become stressed or overwhelmed. Remember “The success of the film is down to the crew” by Doughray Scott.
"I love filming, editing, and I love that it has something to do with the newspaper, because I’m in it too! I like that we have roles, and we all work together to make a video. I think this Club/Department is important because we learn new things, like how to add audio to a miming video (something I had no idea how to do). And it’s always fun to meet and hang out with our amazing team and of course, Mr. McLaughlin." - Maariyah Hamid
"I joined this club because I grew up around cameras and editing software. My dad always had this love for cameras and it passed onto me. but lately I haven't been able to film very much because of school pressure so i joined the Film Crew as a sort of excuse to start filming again. Despite this being a film club about filming many students who have joined have almost no knowledge about filming. It was so amazing to see these students still be an important part of the movie making process despite not having past experience." - Enes Aydin
"I joined Film Crew because I realised that being in online school allowed me to have a little extra time on my hands than I normally would, and I thought that I should find something fun to do to use it up. I like that this club has such great groups of people both running and participating in it. I also enjoy how in this club I get to engage with people I normally wouldn't in terms of interests, or the most prevalent fact that they have separate home schools from me. In this club, I also get to participate in the development of films, as it clearly displays in the name, which provides me with an outlet to exercise my creative thinking." - Sophia Blakey
"I joined the OCV film crew because I wanted to expose myself to new things and try to develop new skills. At my old school, almost all the clubs I participated in were sports teams, which aren’t available in an online environment. I wanted to take the opportunity to try to contribute to a different kind of club, and I’m really glad I did. I like the structure of the club, and how each stage of movie making is outlined and delegated to an individual or a group of members. I also really appreciate that our teacher/club leader, Mr. McLaughlin, is always ready and willing to help us out and give some guidance about the project whenever he can." - Grace Catton
Our crew can’t wait for new members to join. Our film crew director is Mr McLaughlin (damian.mclaughlin@ocdsb.ca). We meet every Wednesday at lunch (11:40-12:20), you can join this club by emailing the teacher or clicking on Join Film Crew below.
