Welcome to the Brookfield High School Science Department! We're excited to have you join us as we explore the fascinating world around us. Our department is dedicated to sparking curiosity and fostering a deep understanding of scientific principles. We believe in learning by doing, so our classes are designed to be hands-on, engaging, and relevant to the world you live in.
In grade 9, the majority of students take SNC1W and in grade 10, the majority of students take SNC2D. Both of these courses are general science courses that focus on biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science.
In grade 11, students can choose to further study Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and/or Environmental Science. In addition, students in grade 11/12 can choose to take Green Industries, an immersive and interactive program based on sustainability. Learn more here!
YES! A key part of the scientific process is experimentation. We are very fortunate at Brookfield to have such a large laboratory space in each science classroom! By making science hands-on, we can better connect theoretical topics to the real world.
That being said, safety is of the utmost importance in our labs. All students have the right to a safe learning environment but use of the school laboratory space is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Students are required to learn about and execute safe practices in the lab in every science course. If the teacher feels safety is a concern, students may be asked to complete an alternate activity.
Every new science course it is essential that students and parents/guardians understand and agree with the lab safety and behavioural expectations outlined in the policy/procedure. Paper copies will be distributed to science students at the start of every semester, however, you can also read and sign the agreement here.
Brookfield teachers are always available for extra support! All you need to do is ask!
In addition, all Brookfield students are welcome to come to the library every Monday and Thursday from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm for extra support. Teachers are available to explain concepts, answer questions, and provide support. No need to register, just show up for a snack and some studying!
Each program is unique and has different requirements. Unfortunately, there is no "one science course" that students should take in grade 11/12. For the most up-to-date information about requirements for a postsecondary program, look at the institution's website and consult your guidance counsellor.
Yes! The Aviation and Aerospace Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) is currently in development. This will allow students to focus their learning on a career in aviation or aerospace. A student who successfully completes an SHSM program receives a diploma with a special red seal, a formal recognition on their student transcript, and an SHSM Record documenting their achievements.
