What is included in my room?
Each resident gets a twin XL mattress with frame, desk with hutch, desk chair, 2 dressers (2 drawers each), shower rod, shower liner, and shower hooks. Each room also comes with a trash bin.
Do I need to bring a trash can for my room or is it provided? How about trash bags, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.?
Each room receives one trash bin. Residents may choose to purchase additional trash bins as needed. We provide trash bags and toilet paper for free, which can be obtained from the sixth floor Resource Center. We do not provide paper towels.
Should I bring a shower liner, curtain, hooks to hang, bathmat, and trash can for the bathroom?
Every resident bathroom comes with a shower liner and hooks. Residents may replace their liner with a curtain of their choosing if they would like. A bathmat and bathroom trashcan are not provided in the bathroom.
Are there kitchens in student rooms?
There are no kitchens in student rooms. However, we have a Community Kitchen on the 7th Floor that has a microwave, fridge, stove, and counter space for meal preparation. This is available from 9am-8:30pm. Visit the Resource Center on the sixth floor during business hours to make a reservation. Residents are encouraged to utilize the fridge at their own risk, as other residents have access to it and its use is not regularly monitored. The fridge is also not intended for long term use, as it is regularly cleaned out to avoid mold and pest issues.
Where do I get drinking water?
Residents typically get water from the water bottle filling station in the hallway on their floor. The water that comes out of any bathroom sink, water fountain, or community kitchen sink is drinkable water. Lots of folks say NYC water tastes great! Many students do prefer to purchase a Brita filter, just for extra peace of mind. Residents are welcome to order that for themselves if they would like.
Where are the washer and dryers? How do you pay for laundry?
The laundry room is located on the 11th and 12th floors of Paulson. The machines are operated using the Hercules CP Mobile App. It allows you to purchase credit right from the app, then use that credit for your laundry. Residents scan the QR code of our laundry room (one-time process). After they've added value to their account, residents can start the laundry machine by scanning QR code on the machine
Are the bed numbers marked? How would I know which one I’m assigned to?
Suites and rooms are marked. However, beds are not assigned within room spaces. You and your roommate(s) will decide which beds you would like to occupy.
What are the measurements/dimensions of my room?
Due to the sheer volume of layouts and room combinations, we do not have specific measurements of each student space. However, the virtual tour and floor plans are very thorough and informative.
Are student rooms carpeted?
Paulson's rooms are all wood laminate floors that are wipeable surfaces. The bathrooms feature a stone-like tile. Please note that our hallways and most common spaces are carpeted.
Can my room accommodate a mini-fridge?
Small refrigerators under four cubic feet are permitted. Most resident rooms in Paulson can accommodate a mini-fridge with a microwave on top. Some students in shared suites decide to have a shared minifridge in their shared common space. Our best advice would be to wait until your arrival to assess how the common space can best be utilized.
Are lofted beds allowed?
Residential Life & Housing Services does not allow you to bring additional furniture, including a lofted bed. Please note that residence hall beds are set to standard heights and cannot be adjusted by building maintenance staff. If you need to request an adjustment of bed height due to medical necessity, please contact mosescsa@nyu.edu. Many students do bring bed risers, available on Amazon and many home goods stores, which allow you to have a bit of additional storage space under your bed.
Can I visit Paulson to see my room before I move in?
We are unable to provide you access to view your room in advance of move-in. However, the virtual tour and floor plans are very thorough and informative.
Does Paulson provide or rent out minifridges and/or microwaves?
Paulson does not have or rent out any mini-fridges or microwaves. However, residents are welcome to rent appliances from a number of off-campus vendors. Small refrigerators under four cubic feet are permitted. NYU is unable to vet any website or listing, so please conduct your search carefully. Alternatively, you can purchase your own as well. We ask that any mini-fridge or microwave meets our outside furniture policy, which you can view the policy here.
Do I need to bring a broom, dustpan, or vacuum for the room?
We would recommend bringing a broom/dustpan/vacuum if possible. We have these for rent out of our Resource Center, but they are available to a population of 425 residents so may not always be available at the time you need it.
What cleaning supplies are necessary?
We recommend purchasing all-purpose cleaning spray, Clorox wipes, shower cleaner (such as Scrubbing Bubbles), toilet bowl cleaner, and toilet brush. We encourage roommates/suitemates to talk with each other to pitch in collectively for these supplies.
Should I bring my own forks, spoons, knives, plates, containers or are plastic/paper items provided in the Community Kitchen?
We recommend students bring their own utensils, dinnerware, and cookware.
Is there anything I should avoid bringing when I move in?
Residents should be mindful not to bring in or order prohibited items. These items will be held at the Resource Center until you schedule a time to remove it from the premises, as they violate our fire safety policies:
Hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, pressure cookers, grills, air fryers, or other open flame or heating coil devices
Personal/upholstered furniture including desk/gaming chairs, headboards, storage ottomans
Air mattresses
Air conditioners, air coolers, and electric heaters
Candles or Incense
Flammable decorations including natural or artificial Christmas trees
Halogen lamps
Extension cords and multi-plug adaptors (exception: power strips with built-in surge protectors are permitted)
Portable washers and dryers
Self-propelled vehicles including skateboards, hoverboards, scooters, electric bikes, and similar devices
Please note: Rooms found to be in violation of our prohibited items policy will be subject to student conduct documentation.
Can I send myself packages/mail in advance of my arrival? For example, can I ship my bedding in advance?
No. Due to the extremely limited storage in our hall, packages should be shipped to Paulson no earlier than your check-in date. Any packages that arrive in advance will be returned to sender.
Here are a couple alternatives you could consider:
Ship your bedding in advance to a friend who is already here in NYC
Pack the essentials of your bedding in your luggage, and schedule the rest to arrive shortly after your arrival
Pick up bedding quickly after arriving to Paulson (there is a nearby Target that sells dorm essentials)
Will you provide moving bins on move-in day?
Yes, there will be a limited number of moving bins available during the week of move-in. Since we cannot guarantee the availability of moving bins, we recommend you bring a small dolly or hand truck.
I want to message my roommate. Can you tell me my roommate's information?
While we cannot provide you with your roommate's contact information, we suggest that you continue to check your housing assignment portal. Roommate information will be listed there as it becomes available. If you have any further questions, we suggest that you contact housing@nyu.edu.
What will my mailing address be?
The address for mailing packages to Lipton Hall is as follows:
Resident First & Last Name
181 Mercer Street, Apt. #
6th Floor Student Housing
New York, NY 10012
To ensure that your package is not returned to sender, please indicate your full name as indicated in NYU's system (Albert).
