Paris can be an expensive city. In general, you'll find that the prices are slightly below those of New York, Abu Dhabi, or Shanghai, but as a student expenses can add up quickly. Explore below for some insider tips to make your money go further during your time at NYU Paris.
At restaurants, you can always get a free pitcher of water by asking for 'une carafe d'eau' rather than paying for bottled water.
Avoid eating near tourist destinations where restaurant prices can be significantly higher.
Lunch fixed menus are often cheaper than dinner for some of the same items.
Leader Price, Auchan, Aldi and Lidl generally tend to be more affordably priced grocery chains.
Pick up food at local markets and plan a picnic rather than spending money on a restaurant. To save even more money, go towards the end of the market when merchants will offer a great deal on their remaining items.
Prepare your lunches ahead of time and reheat them in the microwaves at the Academic Center (there are 2 on the 8th floor for students' use).
Food Shopping Guide
The CROUS restaurants are government-operated restaurants for students. They serve meals, including sit-down lunches, takeaway food, or snacks at an affordable, budget-friendly price. A meal that includes an appetizer, entrée, and dessert costs between 6€ and 7€. NYU Paris does not hold local accreditation, preventing the use of your NYU ID to benefit from the student discount at the CROUS restaurant.
However, NYU Students taking classes at a Paris university have access to those restaurants automatically by creating an IZLY account with their University of Paris student ID. Any interested students at NYU Paris should contact the NYU Paris Student life for help creating an account.
Since the COVID-19 crisis, students may benefit from two meals a day at the rate of 1€ (for each meal) under certain conditions.
Visit CROUS and Izly websites if you want to know more about them.
